In-Character

Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)(250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium.  Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

Colt blinked a few times, having lost himself within the buzz that droned on and on, killing everything outside his self. His disaffected stare traversed the carts, one of which, with a cover of bright orange and garish red, he wasn't sure he had seen before on their journeys... had he? He dismissed it and finally tilted his head to stare down the elderly woman. "I am not of your pact. I do not know why you speak to me so familiarly." Colt adjusted the wide-brimmed straw hat he had claimed from a particularly loud snoring human who had passed out in the wake of the unexplained festival the night previous. His pale skin burned so easy in this dusty heat.

"Oh? You're one of those types, are you? All tough? That thin skin of yours extends past the physic, huh?" The old woman gave him a smile full of holes.

Colt let out a sigh, casting his stare back to the caravan, seeking out that odd-looking cart. "Not particularly, just after that oath-sworn reamed me out for stepping on their bedroll last night I've begun to wish for this whole journey to be over."

"Oh, dearie, Callick is not someone to concern yourself with. He's always been the jittery type, not someone to let get to you." Her eyes didn't leave the side of his head. Colt's ear flickered.

"Yes, well, most people who carry a pound of steel at their side are people to worry about in my opinion. Especially this close.." He let his voice trail off, his eyes tracking southward.

"Oh, is it now you wish to open up, dearie?"

Colt flicked his eyes to the woman that back up into that perfectly empty bluebird sky. He preferred the clouds. "If you must know, I'm here for two things. Someone and something." He paused, hoping that would be the end of it, but the woman kept staring at him. "Alison... that's the name of the first person, anyway." He thrust a hand into his pocket to free a note, waggling it back and forth in his fingers. "Broke her arms, or at least, so I heard. Was contracted to take a look. I'm a..." He paused to think exactly how to describe himself, "doc...tor..."

The old woman nodded him along as if that still wasn't enough.

"Then there's the others.. crushed arms. Missing legs. Progressing blindness." He waved a hand. "I have no way of working through many of those but... my people, the Spire, you know it? What takes, gives and what gives, takes… I would like to heal. I wish to just." He drew his hand through the air in a cutting motion. "Want to cut the rot out of this world. Leave it cleaner than I found it, at least."

He breathed a deep, dusty breath. "What about y-.." The woman was gone. He swung his gaze around. The cart was gone.

"...shit."

Character Name: Coltwell 'Colt' Lykos

Character Race: Arsa Sidhe

Character Age: 40

Brief Physical Description: Pale of skin and hair. Shoulder-length hair usually kept up in a bun, but sometimes let down. Features common to his race, Colt is angular, thing, and altogether a very not-in-a-good-way doll-eyed individual. He has adopted a very clinical, lax expression to aid his patients in knowing that they are being taken care of by an experienced (debatable) professional (not quite). Thin lipped with eyes of jade. Colt is unassuming. Truly an ass of the Arsa.

They call me the man with the plan. And by the plan, I mean the unplanned man who, without a plan, plans for the man.

Hello! I'm Dinomono and I'll be reviewing this application. While I find Colt's IC response very well done and engaging, there's one big thing that's keeping me from approving it just yet, and another thing I'll mention that's moreso something to consider regarding how it ends.

  • The application template requires a minimum number of three references to the setting's lore that can be found in the compendium, of these, a minimum of two should be elaborated on (This basically means adding a blurb of text whether dialogue or narration relating to that reference, instead of just having it be mentioned) The references can be anything, as long as you can find a compendium entry on them, it counts.
  • The last part, where the old woman and the cart vanish. In general we prefer having the more supernatural experiences happen to your characters not in backstory but in actual roleplay once they're in the Spire town, of course, if this is more of just an odd thing that happened in Colt's mind there is no issue, and there'd be no need to change anything in that case.

Once edits have been made, please respond to this thread so we can continue!

Ahhh i see, aight ill do em up a bit different. I took the entire sitch was like a Portent deal so that's the idea with the woman and the cart randomly appearing and disappearing sorta being the hook to the journey along with them knowin the oath sworn's rp weakness thingy.

Any other backstory no-gos I should keep in mind while i revamp it?

They call me the man with the plan. And by the plan, I mean the unplanned man who, without a plan, plans for the man.

In general, anything to do with interactions with the arcane patrons/fey/fables is a no-go for your character having experienced such before actually starting playing, something like "I heard from someone stories about [Fable]" is what you could keep it to in order to show your character's possible involvement with them in the future. The idea with the application specifically is to make an introduction to your character while providing the needed references, then have your PC involve themselves with whatever aspects of the setting they want eventually through RP when already playing on the server.
