In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

Maria, suddenly snapped from her reverie, looks around for a moment before locking eyes with the elderly woman and her gentle smile. As the woman leaned in, Maria angled herself forwards as well, a conspiratorial beam matching the twinkle in her eye.
"Gold," she said, her voice soft and breathy with a mischievous excitement. “It’s absolutely everywhere. And I’m gonna collect enough gold to rival the sun.”
With her bold statement, Maria stood upright again and spread her arms. She breathed deep through her nose, the crisp air of late Falltide invigorating her.
“And to do that, I’m gonna need a Lucky Coin.” She placed her hands on her hips, her unrestrained words drawing confused and condescending glances from passersby surrounding them. Blinking, as if a thought just occurred to her, Maria tilted her head as she looked back at the woman. “You wouldn’t happen to know where I might find one, would you?”
The woman, with an amused snort, shakes her head. Maria sighs, disappointed but not dejected. She leans against a nearby wooden post, and smiles down at the woman. “No worries. I figured it wouldn’t be so easy.”
The woman’s patient smile stirred something in Maria’s chest. It reminded her of home. She gave into the woman’s unspoken prompt to stay and chat a bit more.
“I was born and raised in a Falstoner colony, just outside of The Crossroads. You ever heard of The Crossroads?” Maria raised an eyebrow in mild surprise as the woman gently shook her head. “Huh. I probably shouldn’t be that shocked, eh? All these places that I thought were well-known cities seem to be nothing more than, well, settlements. In comparison to the other places around, that is.” To prove her point, Maria gestured a loose hand at the bustle surrounding herself and the woman. She was still slightly awestruck by it, adrenaline coursing through her.
“Well. That aside. We had a traveler from the Valkian Realm stop in The Crossroads one time when my folks and myself were in town for the day. He told us all about the Lucky Coin a friend of his had recently obtained, and how ever since having it in his pocket good fortune seems to just fall into his lap. My parents didn’t believe him. Even they’ve felt the trickery of the Fae, and assumed that this traveler's friend was the butt of some mystical joke. But the traveler insisted that he was not one for blindly trusting legends either. He told us the coin was the real deal. Nobody believed him. They all did that thing where they give him a brambleberry pastry and a pat on the head-” Maria caught herself, remembering that she was not speaking to someone familiar with the traditions of her small Fallstone colony. “It’s what adults will do to a child telling a crazy story. The traveler didn’t see it for what it was, thanked us warmly for our generosity, and soon headed on his way.”
Maria scratched under her chin as she looked up at the clear sky. “As he left, he said- and I remember this so clearly, “May the sun shine on you”. He seemed to look me in the eye as he said it, though he addressed the group of people around him as a whole.” The woman hummed a knowing sound, and Maria beamed down at her. “You know the saying?”
“It’s a common farewell amongst the Valkians,” the elder said.
“All I know is that it stood out to me. I never forgot what he said to me that day. How could I? He opened my eyes to all there was out there for me to have. He wished for the sun to shine down on me, but more than that, he had me realize that one day I could shine brighter than the sun. And that’s just what I’ll do. I’m gonna collect enough gold that I’ll be blinding to look at. And then I’m gonna march right to the top of The Spire and challenge the sun myself!” Maria simply shone with naive determination. “Of course, after I get my hands on one of those Lucky Coins, it should all be a breeze.”
The elder squinted her eyes at the effervescent young woman in front of her. “Child, have you ever heard of the Phoenix? From the legend of Equinox and Phoenix?”
After thinking for a moment, Maria shook her head. “Nope. Like I said, we Falstoners don’t really do the whole fables thing.”
“Hm. You may want to look into it. I have a feeling the Phoenix will be a very important part of your journey.”
“The Phoenix, huh? I’ll see if I can find a book on it when I get the chance. Thanks!” Maria cleared her throat, as if just remembering her manners. “Oh! Uh, and you? Why did you come to the Southern Reach?”
The old woman chuckled. “Ah, that’s a long story. Not one suited for a young dreamer such as yourself. Come find me again in, say, five year’s time. Then I may tell you. But for now, time’s a’ wasting away. Best be on your way, child.” The woman made a shooing gesture, and Maria took the hint. She started on her way again, waving as she went.
“Hey, thanks for listening! Hope to see you again soon!”
With that, Maria turned and walked into the busyness of the Southern Reach, boot buckles sparkling in her wake.
Character Name: Maria Trislade
Character Race: Human
Character Age: 20
Brief Physical Description: Maria looks like a very standard human- brown hair, brown eyes, tan skin, and no taller than 5'6. But beyond her standard appearance, there's a certain sparkle that seems to follow her. It reflects in the warmth of her eyes, in the occasional bead threaded into her medium-length, freeflowing hair, in the golden chains around her neck that accentuate her otherwise very plain clothing. This spark is nothing mystical, only the mundane magic of enthusiasm and passion.
