In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Varen sat at the edge of the wagon, back pressed against the wooden frame as his arms were crossed. When the woman addressed him, he blinked slowly as their eyes met, then again they dropped to the floor of the wagon. For a while, he remained quiet as if trying to ignore her, but her kind face made it hard to, finally caving into speaking. "Haven't decided if i came here for a reason." He said in a low voice. "Just running from where i've been. I come out of the Walljack settlements, the swamps." The young man stopped speaking, his eyes wandering up to the lady, taking notice of how her expression appeared to be asking for more than that, to which he averted his eyes from, shuffling in his seated position. "Nearly two years back, i brought an outsider in, and if you didn't know, it isn't a great thing to do in Jack culture. We rather stay by close knit company, but i was dumb. Thought i could change how we looked at the world, thought he'd be better. He wasn't. Two people died because i misjudged him." A near resigned sigh came out of him, leaning his head back, a small, disparaging smile on his face. "After hours of arguing amongst each other, camp gave me one last shot to prove i still belonged, not that anyone really acknowledged me after that. They held my initiation rite just as i reached adulthood, a raid to some troublemakers near the settlement. One to which i had to contribute greatly for it to count, so help wasn't something i should have counted on to save my life. Thought i could do it, but when the blood started flowing, i froze in place, hesitating. That was that. I had to be saved. No place for mercy if its to save my own." His voice didn't carry bitterness, just certainty. "Still, i didn't crawl into a hole. The Reach is wide. Heard stories about the Lady of the lake. Back home, we don't follow her, it's said she's all about rigid rules and a stuck up sense of honor. Most Jacks say she's turned her back on us for good, but i've been wondering. If i ask about her back home, i'd just be shunned further, so.. Maybe she's just waiting to see who's worth her time." A breeze passed through the wagon. Varen shifted slightly, moving the recurve bow that sat by him closer. "Course, if the Lady doesn't take me, there's always the Portents. Folk say they have the ability to offer you what you want, if you're willing to give something back. Never seen them, but considering all they leave behind are usually fair inconveniences, i do not see this as the worse solution. If someone offered you a way to fix something, would you take it?" He looked at her now. "Would you take that risk?" Now quieter, he continues. "Anyways, i'm not chasing redemption. Just looking for space to live by my own choices again. Maybe the reach has room for that."
