In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
“I suppose,” she says, “I came here looking for something I couldn’t find back home. Or... something I lost.” Aeyla rests a hand over a satchel at her side. “I was born in the Duchy of Rulan,” she begins, watching the woman’s eyes. “Near the edge of a vineyard, where the azalea grows thick around the border stones. My mother—Walljack blood, stubborn as a mule-raised us alone after my father went off to ‘serve at The Wall,’ like it was some grand honor. Said the family line had watched that stone spine since the masons first stacked it. Only later did I learn it wasn’t honor that took him, but desperation. Guard duty pays coin, and Rulan has little else for folk like us.”
“I thought maybe I'd follow his path. Worked on the Wall myself-long shifts, wet boots, and endless silence. But the quiet… it grows loud. Especially when the Spire glows at night. The way the crystals in that structure hum-like it’s listening-I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So when the Circle of Four opened new roads near the Spire-town, I signed up to scout. To see it. Maybe find some meaning in the place my father stared at all those years, before he went missing in that swamp.”
Aeyla chuckles faintly, mostly to herself. “Besides, they say the Reach has its own rhythm. Not like the Faded Steppe, where caravans sing to the wheat. Here, the land sings to you-if you’re willing to listen. So, no. Not just nervous. Hopeful. Maybe even a little scared. But I’d rather face the unknown than keep living a story that was written for me.”
Character Name: Aeyla
Character Race: Half-Human Half-Arsa Sidhe
Character Age: 23
Brief Physical Description:
Just shy of six feet, Aeyla has a willowy, poised frame that speaks to her Arsa Sidhe bloodline-lithe but enduring. Her features - high cheekbones, a thin, pointed nose, and almond-shaped eyes - are brilliantly rendered.
Usually loosely tied with bits of ribbon or braid-adorned with the occasional charm or polished stone, Ash-brown hair is thick and slightly wavy and falls to her mid-back. Her human side softens her slightly tippy ears, which sufficiently mark her elven background.
She dresses simply but purposefully in long coats and layered materials appropriate for windy weather. A pendant of carved driftstone hangs around her neck, etched with an old symbol she never completely explains. Her speech is lyrical.
