Harsh words have been penned and spoken. A fortnight ago I did the same, and I saw where it stung those I disparaged. At the same time I saw meaningful change, I saw some seek to amend their mistakes, I saw some seek aid and guidance. None swallowed their pride and made an open apology as I had demanded but they apologised, in their own way. And I need not see anyone’s pride trampled in the earth. I write this now because I can imagine the frustration many of you must feel surrounding what has come to light recently. To the former councillor, Lady Noctis, I can only imagine a fraction of what you feel perhaps, but I share in your frustration nonetheless, as well as your desire for us to do better, to be better. To the now branded criminals of the Spire, I write to again demand an apology. But without harshness, without hate, and without judgement. And judgement especially for that is to come later. In my travels from the Ashlands, to so far south I have seen it take the form of executions, life imprisonment and even mutilations. Here I hear of penances. I understand it to mean here we embrace atonement and offer those who have made mistakes a chance to do so. So, to the Scholars, I ask you to return to atone. You have learnt how easy it is to stumble in the dark. When you act with secrecy and veils. Had you stumbled in the light, someone might’ve caught you or helped guide you back to the right path. I can only applaud Lady Noctis’ efforts in that regard, and hope that in your atonement perhaps you may act as she did, and help further that transparency. To the daughter of the Seas, I understand you felt alone, I saw it time and time again - the frustrations, the pain and how disillusioned you had become. I had thought to seek you out, I now see I should’ve found you to extend a hand sooner. But atonement can be had. Return, and let us help you amend your mistakes. To the Knight I have never heard of you to be such a brute. I cannot fathom the pain that you felt for it to have to be released so. Yet as Lady Noctis penned, it is as clear as day it was not justice you doled out, but pain and suffering - one reflective if your own perhaps. Return. And Atone. To the good folk of the town. To the Councillors. I only hope we do not lock away our hearts and our goodwill. We need not forget, nor even forgive but I believe we should offer a chance to these wayward souls, a chance at redemption. Signed: Sun. |
