Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
Melpomene hesitates and the scoots away from the woman. She sits in silence for a moment before, deciding she has nothing better to do, replies.
"It is a long story." Melpomene glances at the woman, who folds her hands on her lap, waiting.
"I am, well, I am from the Mist Isles, if you know where that is. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't, besides the port towns it is rather reclusive. I grew up there with my father, who was something of a local doctor, though most people considered us hermits. We lived in a cabin deep within the woods. Despite not having much, my father never asked decent payment, if any, from those who sought him out. As a girl, I was enthralled by his work. He promised to tutor me if I promised to follow his teaching. I did, and he taught me everything he knew about flora and fauna and how it related to medicine. Even things not native to the Isles were stored in his mind."
Melpomene gains a distant expression, thinking of the past. "People who I helped heal, say I know a lot. Yet, I didn't and still don't believe I know as much as my father." She presses her back her cuticles in thought, as a habit.
The woman clears her throat.
"Sorry. I am terrible company, I have just been rambling, haven't I? A wealthy widow in Sierensong took note of my father and I. She sent for me to come work for her. Of course, I accepted, thinking she had plenty of books on medicine. That she did, but she did not hire me to be her in-house doctor. Rather, I was to act as a governess for her three girls. I can't complain of the work. I was sheltered and fed and all I needed to do was care for the girls."
Melpomene sighs, "I was tutoring the girls, reading them a book - Saltblood and Other Disease, I believe. When a messenger girl was brought into the room. She brought word that my father had gone missing. Our cabin had been laid to waste and there was evidence to believe that he had been taken towards the mainland near Southern Reach. I begged my mistress to let me go, she resisted quiet fiercely, but she was too kind to deny me for long." Melpomene furrows her brows as if something extremely salty was placed on her tongue.
"Could you have not said you are simply looking for your father." The old woman says, wryly.
"You asked for my tale, please, let me finish. It wasn't long before I took my leave on a boat. I would like to say when I arrived my search was harsh and painful. It was the exact opposite. The first person I asked not only knew where my father was, but was treated by him! I discovered him in a clinic and it was there while talking to him things fell into place. He was summoned to work at the clinic for a year, our house must have been looted while we were both away. I suppose it is good fortune I found him, but..." She exhales through her nose.
"Now, I am stuck. The fare for the trip was a massive expense and I barely had enough money for lodgings. I thought about sending word to my Mistress to let her know of the situation, but the fee for the letter is too high. So I am here, on this road, with you."
"A simple story, still." The woman hums.
"How?" Melpomene, askes, annoyed.
"You are looking for work." The woman replies simply.
Melpomene becomes flustered, clicks her tongue, and turns away from the woman for the rest of the trip.
