Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Roryn was arched against the wagon's plank, a palm stretching over the side and holding his body in place. Roryn sat with his legs drawn close, his arms resting atop them. His attire was a little more than a collection of ragged articles: Battered boots and frayed trousers that spoke of harsh ventures. He panned over to the woman as she spoke, returning a crooked grin. "Is that where we're headed?" He said blatantly. "I just climbed onboard, figured the wagon knew better than I did." The fellow didn't look any older than 20, and clearly didn't collect much wisdom in his years either. His voice carried a youthful rasp and an untroubled drawl of someone who never learned how to be silent.
"I come from a snowy area, not much of my folk reside there anymore. They moved south too, not this far though - to some 'midlands' of some sort. They speak of prosperous opportunities, but I know they just don't like the cold." - "I get it though, neither do I." The words tumbled out of his mouth, Every occasional rut in the road or horses snort overpowering his voice. After a while, his gaze drifted past the woman, now onto the long stretch of the road. Roryn sat silently, either lost in thought, or no where at all. Soon a lazy grin would flicker on his face, and he returned to the woman. "My parents were adventures like me, but they so happened to lose interest in it when they had me, suppose they wanted to settle. We lived in a place called Tamohn, but it's boring up there." The fellow gave a rough sigh. "I heard they taught magic in schools, but they just talk about general subjects, and all my buddies went down south. My father also seems to be preparing for some 'war' he talks about, so I don't talk to him much. He had some maps though from his youth, and when I found them I took an interest in wanting to venture out." A lopsided smile and a thumb pointing to his center shown he surely didn't regret much of his decision.
"Want to hear the places I've been to so far?" He questioned, but there wasn't much time for an answer. "I first sailed down a mix of east and south from my homeland, as I heard there were venturers just like me who could teach me about boating." Roryn mused, but his expression changed fast. His eyebrows furrowed, and he flipped one his palms. "-But, they weren't like me at all. These folks, they have some obsession with the sea, and they believe in ghosts or something. I tried to make it work, but one time they kicked me off their ship for being such a good fisher. Apparently I 'overdid' it to some extent and their mythical creatures are going to make me pay. It's silly, I know." He spoke, rolling his eyes. "Anyways, I went east towards a piece of land below my northern home, and the weather there was just right. The forests are beautiful and there was many settlements for me to roam, and that wall clearly had some effort put into it. I wish I had met more of those Valks though."
Roryn paused, his attention now upon the road ahead of them. "But there's too much going on up there, and now I want to see what's down over this way, and I'm excited for it." With a heavy sigh, he finally finished his monologue.
