Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

Atticus pauses for a bit as he considers his answer. He doesn’t want to speak, to consider the life he left behind, yet he finds himself answering anyway before he can stop himself. “I am…from the Valkian realm. We weren’t anything too special, my father was a soldier and my mother a simple cobbler. The hustle and bustle of the cities never appealed too much to me, so I found myself often visiting the farms to paint their landscapes.” His grip on the strap of his bag grows tighter. “And yet…I was born under the sign of the Masque, and my father was always of the superstitious sort. He was convinced I was to be some form of charismatic politician, able to rise above the stations that bound us.” He lowers his head and slowly shakes it back and forth as he recalls the memory. “I could not live that life that he so desperately wanted for me. And so…I have come to chase the architecture of the Aedall. The stories of loss present in these timeless structures, it…calls to me. Emotions I believe can only be captured in the most true of art.”
His eyes find their way to the older woman, inquisitively looking her up and down before he speaks. “I’m sorry, I don’t believe I told you my name. I am Atticus, Atticus Monroe. I am a painter by hobby, though I admit I am nothing more than a dreamer. I dream of a day where I can capture the true essence of love and loss, life and death, through the strokes of my brush. It’s an elusive emotion, one many can’t even process in their own lives, but I suppose that is what drives me. How about yourself, miss?”
