Patrons: What You Need to Know

As laid out in the arcane mechanics page, every mage must form a pact with a patron in order to use magic. It's important to note that in-lore, mages are not using their patron's power; rather, think of your patron like a focusing lens or a catalyst, helping the mage to focus arcane energies from within them.

Who Are Patrons?

Patrons are mortal beings like any other character, however they have access to ancient magicks thought lost that grant them immeasurable power. They are not gods, nor are they immortal — patrons come and go throughout the ages — though striking one down is not an easy feat.

Am I Their Servant?

No. A pact with a patron is an agreement, nothing more. While the patrons generally have quests or requests they ask of their pacted to fill, you do not have to fulfill a request in order to remain under a patron, though mages seeking to grow their power should perform at least some tasks to gain their patron's favour.

Those who wish to be more involved with their patron may be given unique, personal quests to accomplish tasks their patron deems worthy of them.

What is a Patron's 'Medium'?

A patron's medium, or branch of magic, is their primary form of magic; it is what they are focused on in-lore and most of their character is themed around. You do not have to make your primary medium/branch the same as your patron's.

Cantrips?

Cantrips are spells that require no anima (i.e. can be freely cast). Every mage gets two cantrips: one general one, which is picked from the list available in the Grimoire, and one patron-specific one, picked from the list of patron cantrips on their page.

How do I form a pact?

Any aspiring mage should look into the available patrons (listed in this forum) and, once finding one they like, look at the section 'Being a Mage under X'. This section outlines what a patron is looking for in a mage. If you feel your character has something that will spark their interest, make a magic application in the mage application forum, and a member of Lore staff will reach out to arrange an in-character encounter!
