Are you at least 18 years old?: Yup

Have you read the rules? (Link): Yup yup

(Optional) How did you hear about Avalore?: I Googled it

(Max. 1) Were you referred by someone? If so, please provide their in-game username:

(Optional) Introduce yourself if you’d like, as well as any creations you want to share (e.g. art, builds, skins): Hi!! I'm Reyne, she/her, and I just build a lot. I've got some pics on @reyne-craft on Tumblr, but recently I was slumping, so I decided to play some RPG Minecraft! Also I'm trying (emphasis on trying) to grow a YouTube channel.

In-Character
Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium.  Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

The old lady looks kind. Kinder than the Mother you barely remember, kinder than the great-uncle who used as a personal deck-scrubber. Kinder than the auntie who kicked you out immediately from the ship you considered a home for two decades in the nearest port. Well, you suppose the bar is rather low. But how are you supposed to say that without sounding like a total whiner?

"My mama...she made a deal with the nearby Naiad. In the Valkian Realm. She was Valks. Of course. So was my father."

She raises her eyebrows. Apparently, feys are not the usual in the Reaches, only for the Falstoners. Or maybe Fireborne, except you are not interested in being burned to a crisp. If you were touched by a flame-fey, maybe. But Naiad-touched? That would be a horrible combination. You sometimes think that a random fey touched your life more than any human you knew. "That is...interesting."

You still don't know why. Your great-uncle Ossa said it was because your father was greedy and evil. That he needed success and his own name, not a fey-cursed child that filled the family name with muck. But he hated your father. Even young, you could feel the disapproval that you were his child. "To them, wealth's more important than a lineage," he said. "Just one child, they said. For the others that will come." He'd snorted. "Just one." Then he patted his grand-children on the head while you scrubbed the ship floor. It rocked around in the calm waves, and the lanterns cast strange shadows on the wall.

"They threw me away when I was born. But my uncle picked me up, and he raised me in the Pearl Coast."

She is probably wondering if you are chronically insane. Or a perpetual whiner. But she still has a thin smile. That's nice. Kind. That makes you do something you haven't done in a long time: ask for help.

"I have no special skill." You admit. "But I grew up on ships and inherited a knack for business. Do you know any spots for inns? The Crossing, or perhaps the Wall?"

If you can make your name as a famous innkeeper and merchant, you'd attract your family's attention. You could come back. No one would call you the half-fey monster, and everyone would vy for your attention. Just that. Just that. A new life existed in the South Reach. Not as some strange, half-slave, half-elf child. As Rye, the innkeeper.

Image of Skin and Figura Model:

Hello! I'm Dinomono and I'll be reviewing your application, so far you're on the right track, with quite a bit of references to our Compendium alongside Reyne's personal story. That said, as you've read there is the requirement of making at least two of the references within the text in-depth. This means to expand on what is being said beyond a mention and including information gained from a deeper read, for example, I count the history Reyne has about their Fey-Touched heritage as in-depth reference to the race itself with the origin in a Naiad and the locations they're usually found in.
You could expand on any of the references you've made (Fey, Valkian Realm, Fireborne, Falstoners, Pearl Coast, Reach, Albern's Crossing are the ones I count, might even have missed some!) or add an entirely new one, as any entry within compendium is valid. What's important is elaborating on that aspect of lore to a point similar to how you've described Fey-Touched already.

Finally, and this is just as a note since the story of your character is still valid as an outlier, Fey-Touched are generally not discriminated against beyond beliefs of bad luck- The feelings of being 'cursed in their lineage' is, generally an inner conflict of Fey-Touched more than it is a belief held by societies at large. That said, once changes are made, please reply to this thread so I'm notified and can continue reviewing!

"That is...interesting."

Surprise isn’t hatred. At least not yet. The old woman, however much she reminds you of your great-aunt, is a stranger. You try to keep hope. You'd read that some people call the fey-touched fey-blessed. Maybe she's one of them.

You still don't know why. Your great-uncle Ossa said it was because your father was greedy and evil. That he needed success and his own name, just not through diligent work. But he hated your father, didn’t he? Even young, you could feel the disapproval that you were his child. "To them, wealth's more important than a lineage," he said. "Just one child, they said. For the others that will come." He'd snorted. "Just one." Then he patted his grandchildren on the head while you scrubbed the ship floor. It rocked around in the calm waves, and the lanterns cast strange shadows on the wall.

"They threw me away when I was born. But my uncle picked me up, and he raised me in the Pearl Coast."

The Pearl Coast. Unlike the name, pearls were hard to find. You remember sneaking away whenever the ship moored, swimming through the seawater at night, searching for oysters. The more perfect the pearl, the higher the price. The more perfect the pearl, the higher the price. You always had to remind yourself that it was the same with people. If your parents hadn't cheated in the game of life, you might have been the perfect girl. Not highborn, but at least gently born, with a good education and a mind in numbers and business. If you found a pearl, stunted or not, you ate the meat inside and then rushed to the nearby town market. They gave you a good price. Not because of your heritage, no. There, no one knew you, and you were no different from the next street brat who came to sell what they stole, but because you haggled well. They knew you were fey-touched, but people of the Pearl Coast mingled with the Arsa Sidhe often and were used to strange people passing by.

Then, with the money, you would have a treat or two, maybe a book if the pearl was pretty enough. Maybe share a kiss or two. To you, it didn't matter, girl or boy. They were all the same. Just someone in passing. Sometimes, wounded soldiers that washed away in the islands' shores would beg for money. You tried to ignore them. They begged for everything. You tried. You always tried.

You stayed in the white beaches, sucking on a sweet or reading, until someone from the ship came to get you. You usually got a good beating afterward, but that small getaway was worth it. It made you feel almost...free.

(Free, heh. As if you knew the meaning of that word before Ossa kicked the bucket.)

"I grew up on ships. Hard work is second nature to me." You add. Maybe she's looking for someone with calloused hands.

You check her face, looking for signs of disdain. There is nothing welcoming, but she still has a thin smile on her face.

No one would call you the half-fey monster, and everyone would vie for your smallest attention. Just that. Just that. A new life existed in the South Reach. Not as some strange, half-slave, half-elf child. As Rye, the innkeeper.
