In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
"For proof," stated Dreagher. "Proof that I'm smart enough."
The young man had spent his life haunted by The Wall. He grew up as a Walljack, hiding in the Wall's shadows. It provided security, a means of navigating. Dreagher's pact-mates used particular bricks and holes how others would use constellations, and the base as a support for homes. That lifestyle never sat right to him. It felt too simple. His mates were smart enough to use the wall in ways most wouldn't consider, after all. Why settle there?
"We've seen stones fall. The Wall is weak compared to the forces of nature. Gravity will soon claim all."
Dreagher grew more determined as time went on. His beliefs in the "Universal Constant", as he called it, grew stronger. He saw his birth sign, the Beast, as a link between himself and that core of the world. The sheer strength of gravity binds the earth together, it binds the universe. If he could just control that - contain the might for himself - he could prove his intelligence. The Reach, in his eyes, was a place to ty and learn.
"A Jack like me wouldn't do well in a fancy school," he said, the bags under his eyes seeming to darken. "Why go north, where I won't be respected, when I can go south and grab that power for myself? Show my intelligence to those travelling in a new land?"
The thundering of a Waterjack. The pain brought from falling out of a tree. The dropping of an arrow. Gravity surrounded Dreagher. It fascinated him. He wanted the force itself.
The Reach called to Dreagher as a testing ground.
