Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
___________
Velaris would step cautiously alongside her fellow pioneers, bare footed feet padding along the dirt road that promises anew. Paced alongside the wagon that churned to her right, The excited chatter of her peers rung through her ears as a ambient murmur.. whispers of how beautiful the plains sat blanketed under the horizon, the fresh green grass perfect for grazing animals, the clear blue sky rid of any cloud that would pose a threat to their journey...
With her hands folded neatly at her front, Velaris could only picture the breathtaking landscape from their words. Painting hues of green and yellow across her mind, For she was not gifted with sight. Sound, touch, taste.. it was her only way of interacting with the new land that promised her life. She continued to absorb the words of the others around her before a motherly voice rung out to her right.
Her pointed ears would perk ever slightly as she turned her head to face the voice that she could only assume was speaking to her.
"Ah- I am not nervous, I am simply breathing in the land around me. It is.. Quite exciting actually. Perhaps that is why I seem to appear as a ball of nerves."
Velaris gave the woman a faint chuckle, a palm lofting to cover her mouth.
"I Shan't bore you with my life story.. but seeming as there isn't much else to do until we reach our destination.. I will give you the short hand."
She would clear her throat before continuing. She was grateful that she had another voice to talk to on this perilous journey for she had come alone unlike her peers. Families, Cliques of different professions gossiping about their line of work, you name it. However, Velaris had taken this path on her own... with one simple mission.
"I follow this road to make a name for myself. As.. Cliche or Mundane as that may seem, it is rather important to my people and I. Most Korami have their lives figured out and settled by the time they reach my age.. The pilgrimage allowing them to overcome that which ails them."
"Mine did not.. I fell ill during the long winter, 2 weeks before my pilgrimage.. Malnourishing my body, it took my sight and scarred my skin. i was bedridden for weeks. If I could not complete my pilgrimage.. I would have no place where I was born. I prevailed none the less, determined to rid myself of the grasp that threated not only myself, but my afterlife. I trekked those mountains, ate from the land and slept with the beasts.. but all in all. I failed. I failed to overcome that with bounds me to my soul. They had to drag my mangled body out of those mountains, filled with shame and disappointment."
"I am still fighting that same illness to this day. Though, I am getting better day by day, sight still does not find me.."
She would find herself rambling.. Quickly clearing her throat once more, her tone lifted. An attempt to unsour the mood.
"Anyway- I heard trough many a Scholar that since the disappearance of the Aedall, there has been a new settlement bustling with many alike. The spire.. was it? A town uprooted around a mysterious tower.. How Strange."
"I aspire to be like the scholars who inspire this journey and make a name for myself researching the lands that were once a mystery to us. Even the lands and tales that we all know today. If it is like they say it is.. What would be left of us if the same happened another 50 odd years down the line? There must be records and there must be answers.. what greater way to make an impact other than starting with that tower."
"It's like my mother used to say.. A life with no meaning or impact results in a weak soul — one that will fade away after death, to be forgotten."
"I will not be forgotten."
Velaris ended her speech with an heavy sigh, quickly apologizing that it was not a short hand story in the slightest. She always tended to get carried away when someone wished to have a conversation.
However.. That wasn't the full story in the slightest. While no lies where spoken, she simply left out another key reason to her journey... It was the sweet but tantalizing whisper of the Portents.. they say they hold incredible power and the ability to grant wishes, but those seeking them out or even finding them in their presence should be aware there is always a price. Whatever that price may be.. she is still determined to rid herself of that which binds her soul.
And she will do it no matter what the cost.
"Korami usually stray from traveling far and wide.. however I simply do not belong where I once was. So... I am hoping this journey aids me well. What about you?"
