In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Lilly's eyes widen at the sudden realization someone attempted to get her attention, her gaze flickering between the irises of the woman beside. A smile crossed her features, as a bashful shift of her weight was offered in turn. "Was it that obvious?" Her voice was soft-spoken, but not necessarily lacking in confidence. "I just.. Wanted a new start, somewhere I could grow on my own." Her voice rang out in a faint hum, a trickle of her joyous nature. "I hoped.. it would be nice to meet new faces, wander the fields..." Her voice trailed off, a pause as a furrow of her brow in her realization as she turned to the woman properly. "Oh, I'm sorry.. I didn't ask your name, ma'am."
The older woman chuckled, amusement evident in her face as she watched the poor girl stumble on her words. "Evangeline, my dear. You seem shy, darling. Is all well?"
"Y-Yes, I well.. I'm new to these ventures, really... I was never really allowed to stray too far growing up.." She trailed with a faint chuckled, wondering if her isolation did her any good.
"Where may that have been?" She mused, a gentle warmth came from the woman, resting her elbows at her knees, to let her know she was attentive.
"Auclair, ma'am." She offered warmly. "My father worked as a medic for some time, and mother was his nurse." She offered with warmth.
"Ah, struggled, did you? Or just a peaceful life?"
"N-no.. I don't like to think so.. He tended to all that came, so.. I never noticed. It was a farmstead, just outside the city gates, but we saw to all. Wealthy or poor, it did not matter if you needed aid."
A brow rose from the woman then, seeming unsure.
"He.. stayed out of the way, really.. Didn't want to draw more attention that was necessary, but it was a lovely place to find herbs." She reassured her.
The woman shook her head, though amusement was evident. "What drew you out?"
"Like I said, a new start.. I enjoy working with herbs, but.. I want to learn more about the world, especially the beasts. I've read about the dunkbears in particular.. I'd love to see one in person. Their little faces seem to charming and sweet... Just think how gentle they truly are." She spoke, excitedly recanting of the books of her past. "Is it sweet moss they prefer? Maybe something earthy? I'd like to know.. perhaps befriend one!"
"My, you are young at heart."
The comment caught her off-guard for a moment as she offered a nervous laugh, a flush of her cheeks evident as she fidgeted with her bag strap. "Well, I suppose.. I also would like to see a Shimmer-Fox.. but I know that one may never come.. Messenger of nature, they are. I wish I could be alongside a creature like that.. as dedicated to nature as I wish to be one day."
The elder woman then smiled, finally leaning back to settle in her spot as the carriage began to slow, the shift of gravel to cobble felt as her gaze shifted to the road. "Seems we're almost there, my dear. Chin up, the world is not as intimidating as you may have been told. Now, what was your name?"
"O-oh. Lillium... I'd like to see you again sometime..." She offered with a warmer smile then.
"Maybe one day."
