Boulder-backed Grasshopper

Boulder-backed grasshoppers can be found all across the realm, but they are seen more commonly in rocky or mountainous regions. True to their name, these grasshoppers have humped, curved backs that protrude upwards that, combined with their mottled grey patterning, resemble a boulder. However, their camouflage is not their most distinguishing feature. These grasshoppers when fully grown can range in length to the size of a palm to the size of a forearm. They typically live around 20 years in the wild, but in captivity are known to survive up to 25 to 30 years.

To compensate for their larger size, boulder-backed grasshoppers have been known to feed on small rodents in addition to plant matter. Despite this adaptation, they are extremely docile and can be kept relatively well in captivity. They can also be identified by their deep-toned chirp, which is unique to their species.
