Corpse Cicada

These annual cicadas can be found all across the realm in many different environments, except for extreme heat or extreme cold. They are small with black bodies and wings, and bright red eyes. Corpse cicadas will burrow into the ground as nymphs and stay there developing for two years, then reemerge as adults in the warmer months. This reemergence is not synchronized like periodical cicadas, so these cicadas can be seen annually, they only live as adults for a few weeks, just long enough to lay their eggs.

Unique to corpse cicadas, and contributing to their eerie name, is the fact that these cicadas will only burrow in soil with decomposing matter. Buzzing corpse cicadas can indicate a long dead body in the area, or the site of where a once-living organism died, often of other animals. However, occasionally ill-kept graveyards can become home to corpse cicadas.
