In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
He takes a moment to ponder on this question. Although there are varying reasons, all of them falls back to one direct reason. A soft smile forms as he exhales, Azreal slowly tilts his head to look at the clear sky. Today was beautiful, peaceful in a sense. A pathway into a new beginning and a better life. Azreal looks back at the old woman with the same smile all the same.
"I came here in search for a new life, one more of peace and new beginnings. To find the mysteries this world holds and adventure. Ive heard tales, many of them. The exciting cultures and tales. Things such as the Spire and it's origin. Or even how it's connected to how the Aedall people mysteriously vanished. I'm sure you've heard of it, people call it The Great Disappearance of the Aedall."
He takes a moment to look around before proceeding to speak. "Scary stuff really, some people see it as a fairy tale but honestly... I believe there's more to it, and I want to explore. I hope you don't think im crazy too haha..." The old lady waves his thought off, after clearing her throat she speaks. "Nonesense nonsene, knowledge is important, especially if you are new around here. Ive lived many years and heard these tales all the same. It shapes the heart of this world, brings in new people, and brings the return of old ones too."
Azreal swiftly pulls out a small notebook with a quill in it and opens it. His eyes widen slowly, mesmerized by all the knowledge he had noted down. Slow nods can be noticed as he refreshes his memory on the history and culture. With this his attention is redirected towards the old lady with a sharp turn to look back up.
"I've heard around that the Aedall people used to be really protective over the dead. And whenever a member would die, they'd somehow always find the body. Seemingly transporting it to an unknown location. I know it's always been just a theory though, there's never been any real evidence of it's existence but im sure that there's something out there just wating to be discorvered."
The ladies eyebrow raises, Interest slowly growing as she listens more carefully. "How interesting, I must say you do have a lot of knowledge of the culture of these lands. It'll help you a lot with navigating these lands if you plan on adventuring."
He slowly taps his chin, curiosity of the other wonders of this world slowly catching him as his mind drifts into the endless possibilities of what he could find. Alas after a bit of thinking, his mind returns back to the main point. "It's always peaked me, and I'd love to try and search to find where they may have went, and perhaps what they did with those bodies. My family has always been dismissive over tales like these, and never really believed them." Azreal sighs. "But to me, these mysteries mean something! And if I can adventure, be free and just explore the culture within this world, I couldn't be anymore happier. I like knowledge, culture and adventure, it's why I've been so interested in stories and myths such as these. The Aedall people and their mysterious dissapearance is something that interests a lot of people. But many miss their opportunities to investigate!"
There was a short pause as he looks down at his feet. His body wobbling and bumping from the wagons movements every so often. The lady closes her eyes briefly and opens them again, giving the stranger a welcoming smile. "Well I'm sure you will enjoy your time here. Not many share the same vision as others, nor the same interest in the things this world has to offer." The old woman raises her index finger. "People enjoy sticking with what they know, as the introduction to more information will only bring more questions and confusion. Something not many can understand or handle. But I'm sure you will be fine. Go adventure, explore and do the things you'd like to do! Is there anywhere in particular you'd like to visit?"
A look of safety grows, although very nervous of being in the unknown, this conversation was helping Azreal feel more confident. "I've seen some areas around the Midlands and the wall recently. I must say the structure is quite grand and it's honestly astonishing how much can be built. Of course I want to see any other grand structures around, and experience the wildlife that these lands have to offer. I'm sure you've been around many places in your time. I want to be able to do that too. Ive been stuck always wondering what can be out there, and now I'm able to finally explore. To see what the world has built, and find something new."
The old woman nods in agreement. "Ah yes I can say I have been to many areas around. Just like you I too wanted to explore the wonders of the world back when I was younger. But of course my time has come to relax a little more. Not as young as I used to be and these bones are gettin old!" She chukles. "The wonders of the world can often be dangerous though, if you look too far, you may find something the world was never supposed to know haha."
Azreal couldn't help but giggle at her words. "Culture, it has always been an intruguing thing, with how much it varies, and how much history a place can have. Areas where many places, buildings and areas alike can tell a story. Ones that long exceeds our own existence." A pause. "Hopefully once I find my footing, I can start trading. I heard there was a trading hub by the Eastern Continent in the city Mariza, it would be a good place to start getting to know other people locally. I know it's the largest trading city on the Eastern Continent."
The lady humms for a moment in thought as she thinks. "Yes that would be correct I believe, although I was not much of a trader in my time, I know many have gone there for the purpous of trading. So hopefully you will find the things that you need there."
Azreal lets out a small chuckle as a thought crosses his mind, there was slight nervousness behind it. Looking over to the woman he rubbs the back of his head timidly. "If I was to be honest, adventuring is great and all but... I probably wouldn't be going near the Amafells anytime soon. I know that place is really sacred, given the nickname Grandmother Mountains. If I'm rememberring correctly, the name was given by the stonerunners because of their close connection to those mountains. Something about the cold has always scared me a little bit, plus I wouldn't want to be mistaken for prey by accident and get struck with an arrow by the stonerunners I've heard about. I know near The North is also a place I wouldn't venture to. Due to the fact that I haven't heard many people ever venturing out there, and I wouldn't want to be stuck in a could tundra."
The old lady bursts out into small laughter whilst shaking her head. "There are many things you do not know yet. Some groups of the stonerunners are relatively harmless, some can often be more trickier than the rest. But I'm sure if you are careful enough, you will be fine."
A look of doubt follows from Azreal as he slowly puts his book away. "A-are you sure? I-I mean I've never adventured like this before. Despite how much I know, it's still scary nonetheless. There's still so much to learn and figure out you know? So many places to go and explore and see. Not to mention the different factions. Civilizations and more. There's just... So much."
The lady looks at him and nods. "I must say yes it can be quite overwhelming, however as long as it is something you enjoy, then there is no reason why you should be afraid." *Azreals confident smile returns once more as he thanks the old lady for her kind words. "Thank you, I must say this journey has been quite pleasant. I'm sorry you had to listen to me ramble on!" The wagon had stopped moving. An indication that the journey had now come to an end, and the time for the new one to begin. The lady stands and carefully steps off of the wagon, she gives Azreal a small wave. "No need to thank me, I was happy to listen. I'm glad the world hasn't lost it's sense of adventure and I wish you the very best." With this she slowly sets off walking away, Azreal slowly stands up and gets off the wagon, looking around preparing himself to venture into the unknown.
