With the rattle of the wagon, too came the churn in Axis’s stomach. He had been lost in a wave of thoughts, imagery and questions that he could not answer, when a new inquiry arose. Her voice was old, as was she, and the wrinkles on her face told many stories of her life and the journeys she had taken. But, when she asked her question, her words held a youth in them.
Axis turned his head to face the woman, “Why?” He repeated, thinking back on himself, on his journey so far and on the life he was leaving behind. The Ashlands, he recalled his upbringing there and how difficult life had been. Born into a gang of Ashborne stalking the Ashlands, Axis had to learn quickly that life was simply not in his control. He went where the gang went, killed and scavenged as the gang said, and lived as the gang lived. Lived as the gang told him to live. One might think of the Ashborne as free for all groups who do as they please, but some subgroups have a different way of life. Some subgroups have a strict rule about them, to do as the leader says and without question. When told to jump, you jump, there is no asking how high.
But Axis wanted out of that life. He quickly learned it wasn’t for him, no, it was far from what he wished for himself or any children who may come from him. If he wanted more, he needed to leave.
So, one night, while his gang was asleep, he came up with an excuse to get past the night watch, something about taking a leak, he barely remembered now. What he does remember, is that as soon as he was out of sight, he booked it far out of the Ashlands and to the north, into the unexplored wastes of the tundra. Axis spent days there, or what felt like days. Simply wandering in a direction that he hoped would lead to civilization.
To Axis’ knowledge, he was heading east. As far as he knew, it wouldn’t be long till he reached The North. He knew very little about The North, obviously not enough to know where it was exactly, but he did know it was cold and had great mines. He wondered if he could get a job as a miner in those mines digging up some gold and iron.
But it got cold quickly, and that chill seeped deep into Axis’ bones. The deeper he got north, the colder and more difficult it was to trek through the icy tundra. Until one night, he found his eyes closing as a numbness crept through his body.
Assuming this was the end, he was quick to accept it. This is what he gets for running from the only people he knew to show him compassion, even if it was in their own twisted way. This is what he got. Perhaps in another life, he’d be born someplace better, friendlier, some place that would hold him in a warmth that he’d never felt before.
But that’s when he awoke. He felt.. Warm. There was no such thing as the chill of the tundra, and without it was replaced the sound of a bustling city. Sitting up, Axis found himself in a makeshift cot with many blankets laid on top of him. As he sat up, a stranger came into the room and introduced herself as Herschel. She was a tall woman dressed in many fabrics head to toe, with tan skin and rounded features. She had found Axis in the snow during a detour on her way to the Ashlands.
Herschel told Axis they were in the midlands, a temperate, forested land full of cities and bustling life. She invited him to stay with her for a while, until he got back on his feet.
Life in the midlands was easier than the Ashlands. Much easier. It was simple, kind and hopeful. Axis got himself a job at a local market and worked his self-proclaimed debt off to Herschel. But, eventually, he had to leave.
He heard of the Southern Reach, just beyond The Wall, and knew that was where his journey would next lead him. He felt a calling to it, a longing. So, after saying goodbye to Herschel, he packed his bags and caught a ride on a wagon with a couple other travelers.
“Because I need something new”, he told the older woman, surely not curing her curiosity, but that was okay.
