Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)?
Starling rocked slowly to the rhythm of the horses’ footsteps, blinking to attention as she was prompted.
“My Mother has sent me off to see my Father. To think she was so eager to get rid of me, it's a little depressing…” the young girl sighed, tucking a tuft of her crimson hair behind her feather speckled ear. “Perhaps he will welcome me with open arms? All I can do is pray.”
There is a melancholy air to the manner in which she speaks, the lingering sadness and dejection seeps into not only her words, but also her body language. Her body curls slightly into itself, as if trying to shield her aching heart from the turmoil of her situation. Taking a deep breath, the young girl adjusted her posture once more.
“Do you think we will be arriving soon?” She asks, looking out to the long path ahead wistfully. “I'm afraid I'm not exactly the most patient girl in the world.” She giggles lightly to herself before trailing off into a sigh. “I just hope things will be okay with my Father…I haven't seen him much…”
Starling’s thoughts slowly drifted to what life would be like in her new home. Would she see new wonderful sights and explore new places? Would she wander the streets in the town overseen by The Spire, immersing herself in the many cultures melding together on those well trodden streets like she imagined she would when she was a little girl dreaming of adventure? She had heard word that her father was a traveler, a man without roots. Would he take her to far off lands? Starling's father may be meeting her at the Spire, but he could spirit her away to just about anywhere.
Thinking of the future draws Starling’s thoughts to her past. All the memories of running along those well traveled streets, getting sucked into one craft or another by the local artisans that had retired to The Crossroads. The further Starling reaches into her memories, the more the ache of her loss eats at her. Her sister, the woman who raised her, was gone. Starling would never see that smile again, would never rest her head on her sister's lap while her sister told stories, and would never taste her home cooking again. Starling would even miss the times that her sister would scold her, even the times she would have harsh realities drilled into her little mind.
Starling’s gold rings glint in the light of the setting sun as she grips at her chest, wincing for a moment at the emotional pain before taking a deep breath. She told herself she wouldn't let this pain affect her. Her sister wouldn't want her to dwell on this any longer. She needed to be brave, to meet with her father and start again without fear. The real world waits for no one, not even those in mourning. She just had to pick herself up and move along, use the things those kind souls from back home taught her, and make herself a new place in life beside her father.
“It's getting late…we'll probably reach The Spire by daybreak, yes?” She asks, settling against her luggage as a makeshift pillow. “You should get some sleep too, Ma'am..” Starling yawns, resting her eyes
As the hoofbeats of the loyal steeds drill on into the setting sun, Starling is lured once more into a gentle slumber. Dreams swirled around her subconscious, stirring memories of the tales spun once upon a time when Starling was just a little chicklet. The stories of the ever-moving Phoenix and the eternally still Equinox were amongst the fondest tales Starling's sister would spin to lure her into much needed rest.
(note: I removed the mention of the mist isles since it was pointed out that it didn't make sense if my character is thinking about her life when she arrives at her destination
