Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (150 words minimum - please make sure to include some references to our lore in your response!)
Jack shook off his daze, taking a moment to process the kind lady's words.
"Here for work, mostly. See my family was ranchers up north in the Midlands. My daddy wasn't ever in the house, always out on the land. He ain't never taught me much, I figured things out on my own mostly."
Looking to the women, her eyes fixed and engaged with his story, Jack takes a moment before carrying on.
"I did my best out there, tryin my best to take after Dad. But you throw bales of hay around till the suns down and let that sheep smell soak into your clothes and try tellin' me you don't want nothin' diff'rent. I went to the first festival one year and met up with a Walljack who took some convincing, but he said he'd show me the ropes, a man by the name'a - ah that bit ain't what matters."
He pauses, his mind wanders, recalling the rugged tradesman.
"What matters is he hadn't been back in some time and I have it in me to make due on his promise. Helps too for a change of scenery, I ain't never been one to stay in place and he saw that. I used to travel east with a buddy back home to the mountains and stay up there a while, taught me more than I care to mention."
Jack lingers on the thought of his old pal, takes a sip from his flask, and breaths a deep sigh.
"That's in the past though, sad as it may be. I'm lookin toward the future, my new life. I know there's more waitin' for me in those swamps, he said our work up there ain't finished just yet, some yammerin' bout a final test."
With that, the coach slowed to a stop. We had arrived.
