Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

He blinked and looked around nervously before realizing she was speaking to him, and not one of the other passengers packed into the wagon. Clearing his throat, he leaned in a little closer. “I’ll tell you, but you have to keep it quiet. I’d rather not get robbed before I even reach the Spire.” After another side to side glance, he shot the older woman a serious, expectant look. His excitement got the better of him though before she could even respond to his gaze. He dug into his bag, accidentally spilling a few papers onto the floor. Muttering a curse, he quickly picked them up, pulled out a messy bundle of nonsensical scribbles and diagrams, and thrust them toward her face. “I’m going to be a famous scholar one day, so remember the name.” He hesitated, realizing he hadn’t introduced himself yet. “Alexander Mortem. I’m from the Midlands, I'm Valkian in particular, and looking for a fresh start, a new place to do my research.” He pauses briefly before continuing. "Last mid-spring festival my parents bid their life savings on a quote on quote 'miracle cure' for my sister, it's safe to say their money was wasted... and somebody has to find a way to make it back for them. That somebody unfortunately being me." A soft smile briefly crosses his face before his voice drops to a conspiratorial whisper. “And I’m investigating the Great Disappearance of the Aedall. Not exactly an original idea, I know.” He chuckled and brushed some hair out of his face. “My mother used to tell me stories about them,” he continued, his voice softening. “No one has figured out what happened, even after all this time. It just feels like the perfect mystery for someone like me, ya' know?”
