Projects Of Tayde Martolod
Started by Olomet

List and journal of engineering and research projects of Tayde Martolod.

Young man often occupy his mind after a long day of hard work in Nell's workshop by planning and designing various crafts and contraptions. Since his trade and education is woodcraft and shipbuilding, most will pertain to hose arts, though one should never underestimate the curiosity of a bright mind.

I'm moving all Tayde's projects here as to not clutter the forum in the future. All projects will be done according to template detailed in the first post, though they will differ based on type and size of a project. This is not done by any existing rule, nor am I proposing it as a rule or a future way of doing things. I do this for: a) my own pleasure, and b) to gamify a part of my character experience that is not readily roleplayable and, in the process, create something that can eventually be interacted with in RP.

Template for designing naval craft:

Spoiler

First, I determined my total amount of “design points” as 9, plus any bonus to research skill and Intelligence bonus (or minus if any of them were negative). These points I distributed across three characteristics I believe can best be used to determine a future ship's performance: Speed, Size, and Hardiness.

Each of these characteristics can be awarded points from the pool of “design points,” from 0 to 6, giving it a quality from Atrocious to Extraordinary (as we are used to from our baseline crafting). This distribution means that a naval engineer with no bonuses or penalties can still design a ship with all three characteristics being average, but even an engineer with a +6 bonus in that skill is unable to design a craft extraordinary in all three (which strikes me as a reasonable balance).

The ship will then go through four stages of design. Each stage requires three successful research checks. I will make exactly one research check per in-game day, but only on days Tayde is not attending an event. Partial successes count as failed checks but add a cumulative +1 for the next day's roll. If Tayde engages in RP that is directly connected to the designing of the ship (e.g., research in a library or consultation with another expert), he will make his daily roll with a +1 bonus that day.

With every finished stage, more flavored detail will be added to the blueprint until the ship is ready for construction. A book will be created at that moment in-game, representing the blueprints as an IC item.

Template for designing medical aids:

Spoiler

The item will go through one or more stages of design depending on its size and complexity. Each stage requires to complete three steps consisting of one healing roll and one research roll. Both of these rolls needs to be a success in order to proceed.

I will make exactly one research check and one healing check per in-game day, but only on days Tayde is not attending an event. Partial successes count as failed checks but add a cumulative +1 for the next day's roll. If Tayde engages in RP that is directly connected to the designing of the item (e.g., research in a library or consultation with an expert), he will make his daily roll with a +1 bonus that day.

With every finished stage, more flavored detail will be added to the blueprint until the item is ready for construction. A book will be created at that moment in-game, representing the blueprints as an IC item.

Lacquer, paints & oils:

Spoiler
With the new brewing addon available Tayde will experiment with wood finishes. Bottles that hit interesting combination of icon color, description and toxicity will be lore-named as lacquer, paint or varnish.

Books:

Spoiler
In order to finish the book, Tayde need to pass two checks per chapter. Skill used for the first of the checks pertains to the subject matter of the chapter, the second is research. Both checks must succeed in order to finish the chapter. Partial successes count as failed checks but add a cumulative +1 for the next day's roll. If Tayde engages in RP that is directly connected to the subject, he will make his daily roll with a +1 bonus that day.

Template for designing siege weapons:

WIP

First, I would determine my total amount of “design points” as 9, plus any bonus to research skill and Intelligence bonus (or minus if any of them were negative). These points would be distributed across three characteristics I believe can best be used to determine a future weapon's performance: Power, Accuracy, and Portability.

Each of these characteristics can be awarded points from the pool of “design points,” from 0 to 6, giving it a quality from Atrocious to Extraordinary (as we are used to from our baseline crafting). This distribution means that an engineer with no bonuses or penalties can still design a weapon with at least one characteristic being average, but even an engineer with a +6 bonus in that skill is unable to design a craft extraordinary in all three (which strikes me as a reasonable balance).

The weapon will then go through three stages of design. Each stage requires three successful research checks. SEABREEZE

Seabreeze is a two-masted light caravel. With 50 feet of length and 13 feet of beam it is an elegant, nimble craft. She has single deck, with removable planks allowing for a safe storage of cargo. Variable design of a main mast allows for switching between lateen and square rigg while in port. A single cabin located in the aft castle offers limited comfort for captain and safe space for maps and navigation equipment. Her prow is adorned by figurine in likeness of an eagle, while stern in designs borrowed from architecture. The craft is ideal for hauling small amounts of valuable cargo, as an exploratory vessel or as a blockade runner.

Projected properties:

   Speed: Extraordinary (6)

   Size: Mediocre (2)

   Hardiness: Mediocre (2)

   (Design points: 10 (9+1))

Design progress:

The design is finished and exists as an in game item. Every character, with previous knowledge in shipbuilding, can use it to build this exact design.

Rolls History:

Spoiler

18th of Skybright, year 1640: Tayde just returned from Rott with new equipment and felt inspired and restless. After drafting several options of keel assembly he settled for one that would allow for light, yet quick craft with elegant high-chin spoon bow and transom stern. (Roll: 15

19th of Skybright, year 1640: Tayde was attending logging expedition and returned to his apartment exhausted and bruised. (no Rolls)

20th of Skybright, year 1640: Tea party at Phonquis took unexpected and toasty turn. (no Rolls)

21st of Skybright, year 1640:  Finally a day of rest and recuperation. And it has proven fruitful. Tayde drafted profile of long slender craft and filled it with detailed drawing of rib-to-keel connections. (Roll:14)

22nd of Skybright, year 1640:  A day of honest work at a workshop, finished by evening of innovation. Tayde managed to finish first stage of design by deciding the placement of two ship's masts. (Roll:13)

23rd of Skybright, year 1640: Tayde tried to fit a dedicated cargo hold into a ship's cramped plan. Before he realized it won't be possible, he made several mistakes and had to backtrack. (Roll:3)

24th of Skybright, year 1640: Festive air flushed Tayde's head with a magnitude of new ideas. The work continues successfully. (Roll:19)

25th of Skybright, year 1640: Caravel built sides and open deck. Nothing to ponder at this size of ship. (Roll:14

26th of Skybright, year 1640: For small ships like Seabreeze one would expect simple lever rudder, but Tayde in order to save some space in the aft castle devised a proper wheel steering mechanism. (Roll:15)

27th of Skybright, year 1640: Lazy day gone and went. No progress was made.(Roll:9)

28th of Skybright, year 1640: Tayde forced through winter-time tiredness and designed light rigging that allows for swapping between Aedall (lateen) and square rig on main mast while the ship is in port. (Roll:13)

29th of Skybright, year 1640: Tayde got stomped by undead boars. (no Rolls)

30th of Skybright, year 1640: The wound is itchy and painful. Tayde tried to concentrate on work instead, but made very little progress. (Roll:12+1 on next roll)

31st of Skybright, year 1641: The sails has proven to be a roadblock. (Roll:12+2 on next roll)

1st of Frostfall, year 1641: Tayde made sense of his previous notes and finally moved past the sail design and calculated the amount fabrics needed. (Roll:19)

2nd of Frostfall, year 1641: Calculations for amount of rope and design of various pulleys and winches were finished (Roll:13)

3rd of Frostfall, year 1641: As Tayde move onto devising the anchor, he quickly realized  this level of metal work is out of his league (Roll:9)

4th of Frostfall, year 1641: After yesterday failure Tayde made his day by designing a bow figure. Seabreeze will be adorned with the likeness of an eagle. (Roll:19)

5th of Frostfall, year 1641: Drawings of gildings and carvings are prepared with a great deal of detail for carvers to adorn the ship with. (Roll:21)

9th of Frostfall, year 1641: Back to the anchor and still nothing useful.(Roll:9)

12th of Frostfall, year 1641: Tayde had a lot of time on his hands convalescing from his injuries, and was finally able to finish the design.(Roll:15)

Secrecy:

Complete plans are stored somewhere inside the apartment, but not particularly hidden. This is Tayde's side project, which he did to occupy himself in his free time, and he will gladly speak about it in public if asked about his hobbies.

EXTENDABLE CRUTCH

An underarm crutch made of composite wood. The underarm pad is curved and open at the front, with a steel spring helping to distribute weight and prevent overuse injury. A simple mechanism allows the crutch length to be adjusted to fit any adult anatomy, from fey-touched to greatling.

Design progress:

The research is finished and blueprint exists as an in game item. Every character with previous knowledge in carpentry or smithing, can use it to build this exact design.

Rolls history:

Spoiler

14th of Frostfall 1641: Brainstorming materials and construction is on thing, but how to combine this with humanoid anatomy is wildly outside of Tayde's comfort zone. (Healing: 12; Research: 15)

15th of Frostfall 1641: This is the first time Tayde deals with a really complex design that doesn't allow for a boat-worth of space and it proves to be quite a challenge. (Healing: 13; Research: 9)

16th of Frostfall 1641: After two days without progress Tayde imbibed a questionable concoction of his own making, but the the result was lacking. (Healing: 19; Research: 10)

17th of Frostfall 1641: No matter how Tayde looks at it, the crutch is always either too heavy or too brittle. (Healing: 10; Research: 19)

18th of Frostfall 1641: Wood strong enough to support the weight of a grown Greatling and light enough to not burden the most miniscule Fey-Touched doesn't seem to exist. Fortunately we know how composite bows are made, the technique can be used here.   (Healing: 16; Research: 14)

19th of Frostfall 1641: Tayde got it almost right! At least he thought he did, but shape of handles is not quite right and crutch grows uncomfortable quickly.  (Healing: 10; Research: 17)

20th of Frostfall 1641: With more testing of his prototype Tayde almost lost the sense of touch from crutch palsy. Something is horribly wrong with the design! (Healing: 10; Research: 19)

22th of Frostfall 1641: The answer just slipped past Tayde's fingers! (Healing: 11; Research: 12)

23th of Frostfall 1641: With the help of alchemical substance the solution was found! Padding and steel spring will help to distribute the weight. (Healing: 17; Research: 17)

24th of Frostfall 1641: Despite another flask of Moonpetal extract and advice from Elreyna, Tayde fails to move forward. (Healing: 19; Research: 11)

27th of Frostfall 1641: Bottle of extract made Tayde's mind clear. Last details of extending mechanism were designed. (Healing: 13; Research: 18)

Secrecy:

Finished plans are stored somewhere inside the apartment, but not particularly hidden. Several of these crutches exists in the Spire.

EYES OF MARION

Eyes of Marion is a single-masted cog, 80 feet long with a 26-foot beam, making her a versatile merchant vessel of nearly 200 tons burthen. Her single mast is secured to a massive cross-shaped support structure in her belly. A narrow keel-plank provides the base for a flat bottom, ideal for navigating shallow ports. Edge-laid strokes transition smoothly into clinker planking as her side rise, giving the cog an optimal balance of strength and flexibility. Two castles, fore and aft, rise high above the deck and can accommodate a dozen bowmen each, if needed. Cargo is loaded through big raft-covered trapdoors in the main deck. Speed given by simple square sail is not great, thanks to that, a design of its rigging could remain relatively simple allowing for smaller skeleton crew. Masive anchor made of composite of iron and hardwoods holds her in place while in port. Her sides are adorned by carvings borrowed from Valkian architectural tradition.

Projected properties:

   Speed: Good(4)

   Size: Good(4)

   Hardiness: Good(4)

   (Design points: 12 (9+3))

Design progress:

The design is finished and exists as an in game item. Every character, with previous knowledge in shipbuilding, can use it to build this exact design.

Rolls History:

Spoiler

29th of Frostfall, year 1641: New design on the table and work starts beautifully. (Roll:15) (29 Jan 2025)

30th of Frostfall, year 1641: This is the first time Tayde designs a ship of this size. Calculations just doesn't add up. (Roll:9)

31st of Frostfall, year 1641: Why is it so hard to keep clear mind? (Roll:12: +1 on next roll)

3rd of Darkmoon, year 1641: With little help, Tayde is back on track. With ship this big, the usage of compass wood must be especially efficient. (Roll:14)

4th of Darkmoon, year 1641: There is no way one would need so many planks! And indeed, there is a mistake. But that is a problem for tomorrow...(Roll:11: +1 on next roll)

5th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Entire construction was under-engineered. Tayde had to take another step back.(Roll:11: +2 on next roll)

6th of Darkmoon, year 1641: And it all finally came together. In comparison with lighter ships, this cog needed massive support structure. (Roll:14)

7th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Everything ready for  next step - the strokes. With a sip of moonpetal brew Tayde feels unstoppable. (Roll:22)

8th of Darkmoon, year 1641: With supporting structure solid enough, there is a lot of space for two sizable castles. (Roll:21)

9th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Deck need openings for the loading of oversized cargo. (Roll:19)

10th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Spur must be at least the double length of the beam. Ship will have only one sail, so it must be engineered rightly.(Roll:14)

11th of Darkmoon, year 1641: And sail is another roadblock, as it was with previous design.(Roll:7)

12th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Eventful day ended with Tayde and Lyssa overcoming the roadblock by reshuffling the support structures.(Roll:14)

13th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Specialty of the cog is small minimal crew. Making efficient ropework is a challenge. (Roll:12)

18th of Darkmoon, year 1641: No progress on ropes. (Roll:9)

19th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Meeting with Oaken quill have left Tayde somewhat shaken. (Roll:12)

20th of Darkmoon, year 1641: Ropes and winches, finally done.(Roll:13)

21st of Darkmoon, year 1641: Big ships needs boats. Just grab well tried rowboats.(Roll:15)

22nd of Darkmoon, year 1641: Taydes knowleadge in metalurgy is better since he designed Seabreeze, so he is aware the same approach with designing the anchor won't work.(Roll:11)

23rd of Darkmoon, year 1641: Best idea seems to be composite of iron and hardwoods, rather than one piece smith-shaped anchor.(Roll:15)

24th of Darkmoon, year 1641: No place for figurine and usual carvings are easily lost on the big sides of a cog. Would an architectural design be more efficient? (Roll:12)

25st of Darkmoon, year 1641: Yes it would. Tayde finished the design of the ship by adorning it's sides with features from Valkian architecture .(Roll:16) (25 Feb 2025)

Secrecy:

Plans are stored somewhere inside the apartment, but not particularly hidden. This is Tayde's side project, which he did to occupy himself in his free time, and he will gladly speak about it in public if asked about his hobbies.

THE ART MOST SERENE

The Art Most Serene of Devising and Construction of Naval Craft is a written manuscript pertaining to basic aspects of shipbuilding. When finished it would be useful introductory handbook to the field. In second chapter the role of different woods in shipbuilding is detailed, it contains information on tending of trees to grow the ideal timber and on importance and gathering of compass timber. Shorter touch on materials for ropes, sails and on various metals. Third chapter describes various tools from measuring sticks, through saws and chisels to watermill powered saws.

Chapters:

Chapter 1: On Dual Methods: Method mechanical and method Abbacal (0)

Chapter 2: On Materials living and unliving (1/1)

Chapter 3: On tools: Those of dockers and those of engineers (1/1)

Chapter 4: On Ships: types of thereof and families of their constructions (0)

Chapter 5: On keel, planks and decks (0)

Chapter 6: On masts, spurs and sails (0)

Chapter 7: On rigging, anchors and other necessities (0)

Chapter 8: On Gilding and carvings (0)

Rolls progression:

Spoiler

6th of Reflection, year 1640: Starting with the second chapter Tayde lays out, materials needed for construction of ships. Used to ordering rather than gathering wood himself he consider this to be his weakest point, but he conquers it readily. (Nature: 14; Research: 15

7th of Reflection, year 1640: Tayde know how to tend to his tool, he could even make them if he was hard pressed, but trying to explain how, is hard nut to crack. (Forging: 12; Research: 15

9th of Reflection, year 1640: Several trials and Tayde beating muscle memory and refreshed his theory. (Forging: 16; Research: 15)

11th of Reflection, year 1640: Tayde read his notes aloud, and is pretty sure no one can understand them, but him. (Forging: 11; Research: 18

12th of Reflection, year 1640: He rewrote his notes, only to realize they are too simplistic now and not at all helpful.. (Forging: 23; Research: 10)

14th of [April], year 1641: It would be easier if his notes weren't missing after his absence. (Forging: 19; Research: 8)

ARCH SUPPORTING SHOES

A pair of shoes, providing good arch support, stability, and a wide toe box, specifically designed to alleviate issues with flat feet.

Design progress:

The research is finished and blueprint exists as an in game item. Every character with previous knowledge in shoe making, can use it to create a shoe like this.

Rolls history:

Spoiler

14th of Firstide 1642: Why are stones in them? Why of this specific size? Why they fit in this specific part of a shoe? Oh, right! flat-footedness. (Healing: 14; Research: 15)

15th of  Firstide 1642: With help of some alchemicals Taydes makes progress in grasping the principle  (Healing: 13; Research: 19)

16th of Firstide 1642: Tayde not only grasped the principle, but is pretty sure he can devise a pair fitting specifically the original feet. (Healing: 15; Research: 17)

Secrecy:

Prepared plans are kept in Tayde's personal library, prepared for a skilled cobbler as soon as he run across one.
