In-Character

Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)(250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium.  Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

Why is it always the older ones? Nesrina couldn’t help but let out a quiet sigh and squint at one of the corners in the wagon. She straightened her back and feigned a polite smile at the woman. “My family is there.” Turning her head away from the stranger’s main line of vision, she slid deeper into her seat. Whether or not it satiated the old woman’s curiosity, there was nothing more Nesrina had to offer in the current moment. While slumping into her seat, she reopened the already-slightly-torn ‘Safe Travels’ letter. Without a second thought, her mind raced with a singular thought: I hate my life.

In truth, traveling was not something she liked or was even good at. Her father spent years traveling and writing about his experiences, hopeful she would want the same. Although her mother preferred Nesrina with her outdoors to hunt or keeping up with the other Greatling kids for the summer’s competition, she also didn’t mind when her daughter was learning about different wildlife that otherwise wouldn’t be accessible where the winters are harsh. Days of learning the Arsa Sidhe language or reading with her father about the continent’s exquisite flora and different cultural customs, nights left to her mother teaching her new survivalist skills. Those starry nights were full of lengthy lectures given by her mother about the importance of self-sufficiency and staying on-guard for the next boulder life will hurl at you. While Nesrina did try to be more well-equipped for surprises, she did not expect her mother to stand so authoritatively as her delicate father gave a detailed explanation of this very trip.

The lass pulled out her intricate map created by her dear father. Her eyes glossed over the poor linework of a volcano, large mountains, and ‘ashen’ soil. When she was much younger, her mother used to tell her of the creatures that lurk around an enormous volcano at their disposal. For a while, she’d been haunted by nightly dreams of the Fey mind-controlling dragons to attack her family. Never had she seen a fey creature in person, but her father, in an attempt to soothe her nightmares, told her of a glowing Fey that led him to the snowy mountains they currently reside near and the good fortune it brought him. “Without that light, I would have never met your mother. Then I wouldn’t have gotten to have you in my life.”

Snapping back from her childish imagination, she noticed a large ‘X’ crossed over the entire area-- presumably marked by her father after her mother tried to sneak in a last minute addition. Shifting her eyes to the three question marks around the oh-so ancient tower, there wasn’t a doubt in her mind of who marked that as a ‘must-see’ sight. She almost regretted promising her father that she’d explore the land thoroughly and write to him of any new discoveries. What scared her more was her mother's parting words, “Do not think for a second that someone or something else will protect you from harm.”

Eventually, a muffled voice kept persisting enough to take Nesrina’s mind away from studying the land she was soon to tread. Looking up, the old woman seemed to have the kind of patient smile you’d give someone while awaiting something in return. Older people never have anything better to do than talk, especially not in a wagon. Nesrina’s eyes drooped, but she kept some semblance of a smile. “Apologies, I was lost in thought. What do you think of the Fallstone region? Agricultural people, I heard.” She propped herself upright to give better attention to her now-turned entertainment for the remainder of their trip.
