In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Naia had been staring out the window of the wagon, bobbing her head to the repetitive beating of hooves and imagining a song to it’s rhythm. Her head turned towards the older woman, meeting her gentle gaze with blank eyes the same cream-white as the moon.
“Call it pre-show jitters,” she answered, her voice sing-songy, “butterflies.”
The Fey-touched let the woman speak, shyly leaning back as she leaned in.
“It’s a fairly long story, one full of woes and aches… but if we have the time and heart, then- sure.”
She pulled a lute out of her travel bag, situating it comfortably in her lap. She strummed a note, prompting curious eyes from the other pilgrims. Allowing her own eyes to fall shut, she began to speak, soft and carrying a natural rhythm.
“From the beginning, the sea had claimed me as one of Her own. Born with scales and eyes like pearls, my Human parents knew, too, that I never really belonged to them. Always as near the beach’s edge as I could get, humming to a melody only I could hear. One night, when the mist of the Isles was thick and tide high, I was pulled back into Her arms. And my mother--she went after her sea-bound daughter. For some reason, the Siren decided only one of us could return to Her shores that night.”
A pause, her hand hovering above the strings of her lute.
“And then I began to sing. I performed across Sirensong, but there are only so many stories to tell to those who know your story as their own, have been cradled by the same waves. So… I’m here, to find something to bring back, an offering to my Isles.”
Naia let her rounded eyes flutter open, faced with the many faces of her fellow passengers. The apples of her cheeks and pointed ears flushed red as she turned her head away, strumming a louder melody to drown out whatever sound followed--applause or questions or silence, she never found out.
