In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
At first, the thin, young girl glanced up nervously, expecting the older woman to be talking to someone else. Her hands gripped onto her black and pink dress, puffy yet light, clearly meant for travel, while still behind fashionable. Her hair was tied up in two long twin tails, held up by black ribbons. Despite her pale skin akin to a Arsa Sidhe, it was clear she was a halfling. Her height told that much. The half greatling stiffened at the attention from the elderly woman, now aware that she’d been addressing Monarch. Her gaze shifted away for a moment, unsure if she should respond to a stranger. After all, she’d already been pretty jumpy about moving away from the walls. Still, she had a goal in mind, and she wanted to fulfill it. Her gaze lifted up to the woman, who’d be able to see the different colored eyes on the young girl. Heterochromia. One purple, one pink, each a light color.
Her hands that gripped onto her dress clenched, her knuckles turning white for a moment, before letting out a soft breath, speaking up cooly, her eyes sharp, a contrast to how she felt inside. “..To meet my mother.”,she says, letting out a soft breath. Such a small reply took a lot out of her. How couldn’t it? She’d spent the majority of her life settled in the wall, away from war and people. She wasn’t quite used to talking to people, her only companions were the printed letters in her books, her old stuffed toy, and a large Monarch Butterfly. A gift, from her mother.
Speaking off…The Butterfly itself had relaxed on Monarch’s hair, acting as a accessory to her hair, though upon closer inspection anyone could see that the creature is alive. With the question answered, Monarch’s gaze fell back down to the ground, the swaying and bumps of the carriage being the only thing to remind her that this was not, in fact, another one of her daydreams where she’d imagined being able to leave home and explore. This was reality. A new emotion washed through, settling in her heart in a bundle of nerves… she was scared- nervous..and yet..
A small smile formed on her lips. She was excited too. Finally…she’s coming home.
As her nerves ran through her, she held onto her dress again. This was the first time she would be leaving her estate at the wall. It was all she knew, there was never any war there, thankfully, but there wasn’t anything exciting either besides the occasional festivals that she wasn’t allowed to attend. Despite her boredoms, Monarch studied magic, at least, all that she could. From mages around her. She learned about Ciren’na in passing from the Valkian courts, Monarch loved her stories and even felt as if her own ambition could spark an interest. To be more than a lonely lady sitting in a room only filled with books and toys. To be more than what she already was. Before her trip to the Spire, Monarch never got a chance to meet her. Her mother not allowing her to seek her out alone, perhaps in fear for her daughter or fear of the arcane itself.
A breath escaped Monarch, bringing herself back to reality and outside of her own head and thoughts. The Spire, her mother was there. Despite the challenges she faced just to get to this bandwagon, despite her arguing with her family to get here.. a small smile formed on her lips. She was excited too. Finally, she was traveling like she always wished. She was finally coming home, even if it were something new.
