In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
A little smile curls to the woman's lips and she leans forward, her voice lowered into a hush as she hides her mouth behind a freckled hand. "Are you perhaps a fan of fairy tales..? The kind you'd be told as a young wee child, the ones you never thought reality for how heavenly and unrealistic they might've been?" And her eyes wrinkle to a small smile as she leans back again, presenting from an overflowing travel bag a large, dusty, over-worn book. A book of mystique and tales as old as time; a children's story book.
With whimsy she flips through the pages and grins, going through one tale after another, pages worn and covered in dog ears and stains of uncertain origin, until finally she settles on the Twinned Bird's chapter. "Equinox and the Phoenix. A lovely story, don't you think? Chasing each other eternally, the sun and the moon, the lakes and the land. A pairing fated never to meet, yet to always reach out for one another. I think there's more to them than the fable suggests.. And, I'd like to find them. Not just them- But all these stories. You see, I'm kind of a performer.. More than that - A connoisseur of a good tale. A Valk, a traveler. So, my travels bring me here. To find the fabled lucky coin, for fortune and for glory of the Valks, to discover the sleeping lady of the lake and interrupt her humming dream, to discover the traveling band of portent witches and demand their sacrifice!" Her hand strokes through the air in performative manner, just barely missing the large nose of a man sat beside her. Her eyes wide as she hushes an apology and sucks in a breath, quick to sit back down again.
"..Anyhow. Ahem. My ah.. My father was a Valk, like me. Travelers and merchants.. But I never quite was interested in the selling of silks or spices, it just wasn't for me. I was much more interested in the stories the world had to tell. Our travels brought us all over, and I loved it all, always.. My father's fallen quite ill however. He's staying over back in the mainland, waiting for me while I search for my heart here, in Southern reach. I hear the spire has quite the mystique about it. Undiscovered vast lands with a spiral structure of unknown origin stood above it all..? Just my thing." Again her lips quirk to an odd lopsided smile, eyes cast over the passing road behind them. "I cannot wait for what stories this new world has to tell."
