In-Character
Respond to the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sitting near you smiles warmly, with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond?:
Kaiser’s gaze lifted from the pages of his journal, which he closed with an audible snap. He tightly drew the leather twines together, giving it an extra tug for good measure before drawing in a deep breath and peering towards the woman sitting nearby. “It is only natural to be afraid of what lies beyond the Wall.” His voice was kept low, with a softness seemingly meant to ease the old woman. “I believe there is a purpose awaiting me in the Reach.”
Through yellowish-gold eyes, he analysed her features, taking in every line and blemish on her face. Upon hearing her reminisce of her first time travelling into the Reach, his lips spread into a broad smile. “I intend to make a name for myself here; we’re at a pivotal point for science. The University in Tamohn is a shadow of what it was in the past, and Scholarly pursuits have all grown stagnant– I’m tired of pretending the world is just what we can see before us. I want to study magicks, and push the limits of what we know to be true.” His brow furrowed a moment, his gaze lowering. He gripped the edge of the bench beneath him, as well as his brother, asleep beside him, to steady them as they hit a bump in the road.
“I will not crumble–” He muttered, taking in a deep breath and staring down at his trembling hands. His eyes closed for a moment, and then, invigorated, his tone became livelier. “We’re dawning on a new age of exploration, there are new species of flora and fauna to be recorded, ruins to be excavated and preserved. I could be the next revered zoologist, and compile a Bestiary of the Reach; though I admit, I don’t think I could ever top the discovery of the Dunkbear–” He paused, realising just how loud he’d gotten.
“I know I can get carried away–” His voice softened again, and he glanced back towards other travellers who’d started snickering at him, dipping his head in embarrassment. “I just want to know more, and to see more. I need to live, and breathe the history of the Reach. I need to understand the first settlers in this land; if not for myself, for the sake of my family. No longer will I be a burden to them.”
