Read the following prompt:
The sound of clinking glasses and idle chatter welcome you in as you find yourself stepping into The Full Cask. An older man with a full mustache and warm smile beckons you over to the bar he's tending. His gazes washes over you, a glint of some knowing look shining in his eyes. As you sit, his voice rumbles out:
"Hello there stranger! What can I get for you?"
After you order, he continues to make small talk. "You must be a newcomer. I'm Maarten, glad to meet you." He says with a certain kindness in his tone.
"Tell me, what brings you to the Spire?"
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)Usage of AI to generate, modify or translate the writing on your application will result in denial of your whitelist. There will be no chance to re-apply afterwards.
Your Response:
"Oh my gosh, HI!" Gnat shouts. "I'm Gnattalie but all my friends call me Gnat. I just set out from my parents farm in Fallstone." She wipes the dirt from her hands. It joins the dust on the floor around her from years of other passers by.
"Well! You're a long way from Fallstone. Are you another wheat farmer, perhaps?" Maarten asks. Gnat shakes her head. She thought back to her parents farm back in Fallstone. Her mind filled with images of rolling golden fields. She shook them off.
"Nope, not anymore! I'm a Soils specialist!" Gnat says, putting a thumb to her chest. "I'm looking to catalog and profile the soils of ALL the regions." she remarks with a big toothy smile, whilst pulling out a map and large book titled "AGRONOMY".
"That's quite the task Gnat, this world is quite vast." Maarten said. "To what end?"
"Well Maarten, I'm going to become a Holy Gardener." Gnat said proudly. "Once I figure out how to do that... Could I get a cider?" Gnat asks
Maarten starts preparing a pint of cider. "Can't say I'm familiar with what that means. Three crown please."
Gnat takes off her large backpack. It hits the dark tavern floor with a thud. She pulls out jar after jar filled with soil. Finally, with a tug, she pulls out a small purse. She plucks four crown from the pouch and sets it on the counter.
Maarten glances over the bar at the pile of dirt on his floor. "Haha looks like you've got quite the adventure planned out for yourself." He says.
Gnat pauses for a moment and thinks to herself "Do you perhaps sell land? That seems like a good place to start" She takes a sip of the cider. It is fresh and familiar.
Maarten looks at her quizzically. "No I do not friend, but I'm sure you will find someone who does. This is The Spire after all!"
"Alright then. If you know anyone who need their soil tested, send them to me!" Gnat says through her glass.
"I will Gnat. Good luck out there." Maarten says. Gnat scoops up the jars from the ground and haphazardly pushes them back into her bag. They click and clack together as she stands the bag upright and slings it across her back. She waves goodbye to Maarten. He waves back with a smile and a rag in hand.
She steps out of the warm tavern to a gust of wind hitting her face. It blows the hair as she sets out, a whilst flipping around her lucky coin, given to her by her father. It was well worn from years of being held, but it still shone bronze in the sunlight.
She thought back to the day her father gave her the coin.
"These are cocoa beans. They can't grow in this climate. It's a bit too dry" said the Valkian merchant woman, leaning down to a young Gnat.
The cocoa beans fell into her hand. Her eyes widened as she saw them. They smelled sweet and perfect.
"We grow them in specialty soil in a greenhouse." smiled the merchant. "A good healthy soil is the building block of healthy crops. I should know." the merchant leaned in and whispered to Gnat "I'm a holy gardener"
Gnat's eyes widened. She had heard about those from her neighbors. She had so many questions. Can this lady really do garden magic? How did she learn? Could she take Gnat there? She looked up from the cocoa to ask, but the merchant had already turned away from Gnat and back to her father, who was walking back from his tool shed.
"Thank you for your help, Patrice. I don't know what we would have done about those..." She looked back to Gnat concernedly. "...locusts without you."
Gnat shot her father a confused look. He shot one back that said "Don't worry about it. Adult stuff." At least, that's what she thought it meant.
"I want you to have this" the merchant said as she pressed something into her fathers hand. His eyes widened.
"Annalyn are you sure?" Her father asked, but she ignored him, already walking back to her cart.
"May the sun continue to shine on you Patrice." and then she was in her cart and riding off.
Gnats looked up at her father. "Dad what's that?" He sighed and sat in the dry golden grass of their front lawn. Gnat took a seat next to him.
"This is Annalyn's lucky coin." He passed it to Gnat. She turned it over in her palm. It did not look like the few crown that jingled in her pocket. It was bronze and inlayed with intricate images of a forest.
"Its a very special coin, so I want you to hang onto it and keep it safe." he said to her with a grin. There was something tired behind his eyes as he said it. "It will bring you luck"
Gnat shook the memory away and focused back on her surroundings. "A holy gardener..." She mumbled aloud. Could she be one? Did being a soil scientist count as gardening to whatever spirit granted that status. All of these years later and she still didn't have an answer. For a moment she frowned, but then looked back down at the coin.
It sparked a flame of hope. Her father told her she could do anything, with its help. She never really understood why the coin would make so much of a difference, but she trusted her father. She clutched it close and continued walking. "Someone's gotta sell me some land" she mutters to herself. "Theres so much of it!"
