In-Character
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Damian sat quietly in the wagon, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the rolling plains of the Southern Reach met the sky. The chatter of the other travelers washed around him and faded into a dull hum. Their excitement felt distant to him. He had little to share, little hope to offer, as thoughts of his home now lost to fire and memory, pressed heavily on his mind. For Damian, the beginning had already come and gone. What remained was simply the road, and the faint hope that somewhere along it, purpose might be found again.
After a long pause, He answered the woman’s gentle question without turning his gaze. “I am from Veyndral Hollow,” he said, voice low but steady. “A small settlement north of the Wall. Life there was hard, but it was ours. We had no lords, no banners of the great houses, only our land and the work of our hands. That ended when the southern collectors came. They demanded our grain, our iron, our people—for wars fought far beyond our sight. They promised protection in return, but none came.” He paused, thumb drifting absently over a scar on his knuckle."“When the Walljacks rose up against the levies, they claimed to fight for justice, claimed the North had been bled dry and forgotten. Maybe there was truth in that. But truth did not restrain them for long. They became no better than those they fought. Villages like mine, that refused to bend to either side, were caught between the Crown’s demands and the Walljacks’ threats. Veyndral Hollow was caught in between a War between two factions. Because of that, the village was caught in it as collateraL, because of our refusal to submit. They burned downed our town, tortured and slaughtered almost every single villager in the town. It was consumed in chaos. The land south of the Wall does not remember those like me. The North was bled dry, and when its people cried for aid, none came. Those who survived scattered. I was sixteen when I first took up a blade, it was still pretty early on in the war, I had no choice but to do so to protect my family and the ones I cared about but in the end, I had failed to protect those that mattered to me most and barely making it out alive and ever since then I have not set it down.” He finally glanced toward the woman, his expression hard to read. "In the chaos, I lost my family, everyone i ever cared about. I failed to protect them. So I simply wandered on the road with no real purpose." He paused, resting a hand on the hilt of his blade. “I’ve been on the road ever since. I fight when I must, but survival alone isn’t enough. I came to the Southern Reach because it’s wild, unsettled, and unclaimed by any crown or bandit and also hearing tales of it's past and how the Arsa Sidhe once walked these lands before vanishing, leaving their ruins and their silence. Some say the Southern Reach is empty—unclaimed and others say it holds dangers but It does not matter to me. There’s work to be done here, and I want to find a place where I can start a new path, after the tradgedies of my past, or perhaps a cause worth following. I don’t seek glory or comfort. I just want somewhere to put my life and skill to use."He turned back to the plains, shoulders settling with quiet resolve. "That is why I have come to the Southern Reach. “I do not seek glory, nor peace but for the chance to choose what my strength serves. To put an end to wandering. And to see if, in this place of beginnings, I might finally find a reason to set down roots—or a cause worthy of raising steel. If the Reach offers that chance… then that is why I am here.”(ok i mightve gotten a little carried away rambling on but i hope this is good enough)
