It’s been a long while since I last thought of love.
“Don’t you see you’re worthless, and easy to ignore?”
From the night I was born, my world was wrought of rage, fear, and loss.
“Your father was right, and your children will cry as you did.”
A man lost the woman he loved, and was left with a burden too heavy to bear.
“He could only let it linger for so long, there’s a reason your name is written not in chalk but in blood.”
And I, young and helpless, was the one to pay.
“As the world must pay you back now, for with you pain has had its way.”
For nights so many I have lost count, my thoughts tormented me. But I refused to listen.
“No matter how hard you try, you always lose this fight.”
I’ve hidden my pain, concealed my scars. Anger is the best mask of all.
“Your wounds make you strong, and your helm will make them fear you.”
I took refuge in what I could. Life was almost tolerable this way.
“You’ve been alone in this world since the day you were given a name.”
Solitude, my most faithful ally. One who never hurts, never betrays.
“Of course I’d never harm you, I’m your only friend.”
I wear no banners, I am free of this world. People’s words with me have no sway.
“But from the day you were born, you were always a slave.”
They know that I'm fearless, and that makes them afraid.
“Death is fine, it’s their disappointment and judging stares you can’t bear.”
Silence, that's not true– But would they believe me, if I said I’ve changed?
“You’re too far gone, it’s your past you can’t amend. It's too painful, and too late to try.”
Men who came to cut my head for coin, even after blades met flesh; the only ones to listen, the only ones to care.
“And for what, they all hate you anyway.”
I may yet have more to give, I may yet have more to gain. Perhaps you're right, but only time will tell.
