In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Ano extended a hand towards the woman, firmly shaking her gentle grasp. Her warm smile was hidden behind her metallic plague doctor mask wielded together by various metals. “A change of pace, one might say,” she shrugged. “But honestly, I feel as if that’s the majority ‘change of pace, change of scenery.’” She dramatically waved towards a group of elves seated at the opposite side, “I’ve heard at least four people say the same,” she deadpanned.
She removed her mask and inspected it closely. Revealing a scrunched-up, pale face focused on the metalwork, her green eyes squinting and her mouth pressed into a thin line. One side was not ground down enough, the bonds too weak and ready to break off at the slightest touch. She slowly traced the crooked joints with her finger with a growing frown. “Maybe that was the right choice, clearly can’t do metal work,” she sighed while slipping the mask back on.
With an apologetic nod, she turned back to the woman. “Parents owned a metal shop in the Midlands” she explained, “But Mom said to explore some other ‘opportunities’.” Ano let out a small laugh as she remembered their faces as they tried to reassure her it was ‘great’ and ‘amazing’ as she showed off the crude mask. The way their shocked faces formed a thin, almost painful smile would be a memory she cherished.
“But I have heard of these fables.. Um..” she snapped her fingers as she tried to remember the name, “Planter? No doesn’t sound right.. Caretaker.. It was something about plants.” Ano let out a groan of frustration before she was interrupted by a giggle beside her. The elderly woman smiled warmly as she tried to stifle her laugh, “Fable of the Divine Gardeners?” In her excitement, Ano slammed a gloved fist down on the soft cushions, “YES!” She exclaimed loudly before quickly covering her mouth and glancing shyly around her, thankfully everyone around her seemed invested in their own conversations.
“I mean yes” She cleared her throat as she ignored the rising heat on her cheeks. “I-I..” Another quick clear of her throat before continuing, “I learned the basic forages and common animals in the midlands but imagine expanding that knowledge. Being able to differentiate herbs just by feel or sight alone, now that would be something.” She whispered in awe, “Learning how an ecosystem works and our place in it.” With a small laugh she quickly added, “But if that doesn’t work out for me, I could always just live in the swamps and scare some poor children who dared to enter.”
Ano turned to glance at the vast blue skies and green valleys that seemed to expand forever, she slipped a hand into a pocket hidden in her robes. She felt the cool metal of her lucky coin and grinned behind her mask. “Where are my manners? I’m Ano, pleased to meet you ma’am, and pardon my ramblings.”
