In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Elwin reclined against the hardened wood of the wagon, adjusting his arms to find some brief respite amidst the shifting sea of bodies. It was by far too many people for a single carriage, but what could one expect for such a low price? He imagined it to be the same heat as the storied bathhouses of Korami that dotted the rocky shores across the sea. All of the heat and none of the relaxation, anyways. The wheels creaked and groaned like a widow's wail as the wagon rolled over a patch of rocks, and the bump sent Elwin up and back down again with a harsh thud. He squeezed his bag with a sigh, shutting his eyes and hoping the journey's end would come just a moment sooner. His attempt at rest was soon interrupted by a voice at his left. An older woman, asking why he has come to the Reach. Elwin's ears thought her voice was soft, and his eyes thought much the same. He riposted her question in his head; Why have you come to the reach? The Reach was a young person's game. Plenty of opportunity, if one had the coin. Or the muscle. And a woman her age traveling in this wagon clearly had neither. By her accent, he presumed she was probably a Falstoner. That land was not like his home, a petty village on the frontier of Valkia. No, not at all. Everyone knew that Fallstone's endless fields of grain could feed the King-Emperor's Red Fist a hundred times over. Those people did not know hunger. A faint, near sympathetic smile curled at Elwin's lips. A pity. She would probably wander off into the wilds and perish to the claws of some wretched beast. Or be run through my some brigands. She was not built for struggle, and there was no point of talking to someone like that. What use would they be? He had made this journey with only one goal in mind. To prove himself and climb the rungs of man. He may have been born the son of a farmer, but his sons would be princes. Elwin did not yet know he would build his throne, but every fibre of his being told him this was the place to do so. And so he scoffed at the woman, shutting his eyes once more and envisioning his future.
Character Name: Elwin
Character Race: Human
Character Age: 25
Brief Physical Description: An average height but well-built young man, with dark hair and eyes and skin tanned by a lifetime in the fields. His hair was styled in the way of a peasant, sharply shaved on the sides and the rest left rebellious. He had sharp features which framed tired bags around his eyes. Despite this, the man's gaze itself seemed energetic, and he radiated a certain confidence. He wore a plain brown tunic and had a red-fur cloak draped around his shoulders from a fox hunted last season.
