In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
To the first question, Florin merely closed their eyes and hummed. Perhaps to refute her statement, or perhaps to agree. A non-answer.
The Southern Reach, as a whole, is not unfamiliar to them. It is strange to be returning to these lands after many years, though 'nervous' might not the word to describe it. They were raised as a Walljack, after all. Half of their life (and then some) was spent navigating the swamps, before their father took them across the wall, across the Valkian border. Something along the lines of searching for a better life in Rulan, they think. Their father settled as an apothecary, but they opted to continue traveling with a pact of their own.
A couple more years walking among the Valks, and several brief journeys into Fallstone for - some mercenary work with their pact, they think. Their pact are all long gone, regardless. And that leaves them traveling by their lonesome. Their companionship has only consisted of birds and bugs and frogs or whatever creature that ended up being their dinner since then.
A Walljacks bond is not one easily severed. Yet, Florin still ran away from it all, after a mercenary job that could've killed them and their team. They tugged at the wooden prosthetic that replaced their left arm, hidden behind their cloak. A foolish choice, perhaps, but there's no use stewing in the past. What's done is already done.
"…I'm but a traveler, wanting to satiate their curiosity." Florin replied after some deliberation. They were being truthful, for the most part. Born into a life of a wanderer meant they could never truly stomach the staleness of Rulan. Indeed, They never would've been satisfied as a farmer toiling away, a warrior bound to a post, or dedicate themself to a craft. No, they are too much of a 'jack' of all trades for that - they chuckled to themself at the pun.
"Curiosity, eh?" The woman grinned. "I suppose that's much of a reason as any."
Florin nodded. "Tales of this place runs far."
There's nothing quite like The Spire out here, is there? At least, if it is all it's cracked up to be. They heard tales of the magical nature of this place, a mystery left by the disappearance of the Aedall. Stories of fey trickery and the supernatural, and, a whole lot of vampires, apparently…? they've ran into some of these before, but, perhaps they had simply been swindled by the tall tales of that merchant in Mariza, from the way they have spun the abundance of mysteries. They paid a hefty price for those stories, too - not a lot of coins by the standards of most, but, still too many to them. Still, they've learned to not to speculate too much without seeing it for themself.
But, they've seen more than enough bizarre, dangerous things in their travels, and they have persisted this far. They glanced up, past the woman, the shifting figures around them, and over the horizon. The structure, reaching it's way up into the sky, like a beacon that guides their path.
And thus that's what they'll do. Persist.
