Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Zenevieve blinked, dragging herself from her thoughts. The woman’s eyes were warm, patient, and something in her expression told Zen that she already knew the answer—at least part of it.
“I suppose it’s obvious, isn’t it?” She exhaled, shifting her pack against her side. “I’m not from here.”
Her voice still carried the clipped cadence of the North, though she’d tried to soften it. A habit she’d picked up after leaving Skykeep, where her words once had to be sharp enough to cut through the cold. Life there was built on iron and stone—fortresses hewn into the mountains, mines rich with gold and silver, smithing guilds that crafted weapons fit for kings. An aunt she never really got to know used to say their blood ran as thick as the ore in the depths, but what use was metal when winter came? When war choked the wheat shipments, and we rationed bread as if it were more precious than the gold that they traded?
She pulled her cloak tighter around her body, though there was no chill here. The Reach was nothing like the North. Here, the land stretched open and green, the hills rolled like waves beneath a sky that yawned wider than any she had ever known. It was untouched, shielded by the swamps and mountains, spared from the endless feuds of royal bloodlines. Once, it had belonged to the Aedall, but they had vanished, leaving only ruins—and, she supposed, opportunity.
Absentmindedly, she ran a hand over her hair, fingers brushing the slightly pointed tips of her ears—a trait that wasn’t unheard of back home, but still set her apart. It had never been enough to matter, not really, but it had been enough to draw looks. She glanced at the woman beside her, the ghost of a wry smile tugging at her lips. “The Reach is a place for new beginnings, right? Thought I'd try my luck.”
Character Name: Zenevieve
Character Race: Human
Character Age: 26
Brief Physical Description:
Zenevieve Description:
Eyes: Large, gentle and dark eyes- a chocolate colour, similar to her hair. They are wide and forthcoming with emotion, curious to all that is around her and hidden by a veil of inky black lashes.
Hair: Recognisable by its thoughtless choppy cut, Zenevieve’s hair falls halfway down her back in a twisting and waving design. Thick and dark brown, it is often tangled and wild with braids woven throughout it.
Skin: Pale, though not incredibly so; there’s certainly an underlying colour, though likely muted due to the cold environment she was raised in.
Visage: Heart shaped, her dark hair frames her complexion in choppy waves. Her brows are thick and well-shaped, they bear the same dark colouration of her hair.
Body Type: Zenevieve’s frame for the most part is narrow and lithe, with exception in regards to her broad shoulders. She possesses muscle though such is not obviously apparent due to the extensive furs and leathers she wears for the biting cold. She is made of knobbly knees and near-constant scrapes.
