The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands. “Nervous?” You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes. “I can tell it’s your first time. Why are they important to them?)   Taye draws a slow breath, letting the rattle of the wagon settle into my chest, and offers the older woman a small, thin smile. “…Nervous? A little,” She admits, brushing a strand of hair behind one large ear. “But mostly—I think—I’m trying to remember how to be someone new.” Taye's purple eyes drift out across the plains again as she continues, voice quieter.“I’m Korami, from the cliffs east of Ko’ram. Where I grew up, every home—no matter how poor or proud—keeps a family blade above the mantle. The steel isn’t what matters; it’s the story it carries. My clan’s was dull as river rock, chipped at the edge, something half-forgotten from before The Collapse. But my sister loved it. Said its dents proved our bloodline had survived every storm thrown at the Arsa Sidhe—war, famine, even our own pride.” Her throat tightens, and she pauses.“She died last winter. A mountain pilgrimage gone wrong. She was always the braver one. After that… the house felt too small. My mother and I—” She shakes my head. “We’ve spoken Ancient Tongue our whole lives, but suddenly even that felt foreign on her tongue. She clings to old Korami ways, the strict kind, the kind that blames rather than grieves. Even our Handsign—something she once taught me so patiently—became another weapon between us. Some silences cut deeper than blades.” Taye looks back at the woman, offering a rueful smile.“So I left. Took a new sword with me, as tradition allows—a blank beginning for a new branch of the family line. Maybe foolish. Maybe necessary.” Her fingers tap the wooden bench in a slow rhythm.“And the Southern Reach… well, the Aedall built this place as a monument to what we once were. I don’t know if that history still matters. But I’m hoping that somewhere out here, I can decide what my story is.
