Spoiler
Arno is not cruel for cruelty's sake, nor because he particularly despises the people around him. He simply never developed much reverence for the rules that others seem to accept as the natural order of things. He learned early that the world does not care for fairness. He watched how things worked. Predators pursued the weak. The strong took what they could. Those unable to defend themselves were pushed aside, and those who could not fit into expectations were shunned and treated as problems to be corrected. He was taught, in one way or another, that there was a proper way to exist. There were things a person was supposed to want. Ways they were supposed to behave. Lines they were not supposed to cross. Desires to be swallowed. Instincts beaten in submission. The world had its rules, and those who refused it were trampled. Arno wasn't an exception.Weak for much of his life, and weakness, he learned, was something the world forgave not, so he denied the world back with the honesty of a wild beast. With pure, brutal force. He desires strength over all. To be the absolute peak of strength, not so he could trample on others, but to never be trampled on again. He wants the ability to take hold of his life with overwhelming force that no one can decide what happens to him. He wants to seize the gains the world withheld from him, even if he cannot comprehend what those gains are. If there is a door that has always been closed, he does not want someone to open it for him. He wants to become strong enough to tear the entire wall down. Arno would not approach Ciren'na because of her magicks, nor because her philosophy particularly speaks to him. He would approach because she is powerful. That is enough. Power attracts him in the same way fire attracts a moth.If she were to recognize the ambition in him and offer him something, he would simply accept it. Or he'd try to wrestle it from her hands by force. Albeit unwise. He'd die trying nonetheless.
