That out of the way, the conclusion of this chapter:

Part 2:  In the Raiders' footsteps [Complete]

Not all cowards make it to their beds. And not all wars end with silence. Some echo through corpses too stubborn to stay dead.

The hunters had chased a trail - bandits, a stolen heirloom, a glimmer of light beyond the treeline. What they found at the forest’s edge wasn’t a camp of living men, but a graveyard with waking eyes.

No warmth. No guards. Only rot.

The raiders were still there - in a way. Stripped of thought, but not of their rage. Twisted flesh marched in old formations, fought as though a war had never ended. Rusted steel met arrowtip and blade.

Whatever called them back to fight … wasn’t there to explain itself.

But the dead stayed down this time. Mostly. Together, the hunters burned the corpses clean, ending whatever unnatural tether held them to this earth.

Epilogue:

She stumbled to the group after the last corpse fell - wounded, weak and eyes red from grief. A stranger to some, Perhaps kin to others’. Her voice, though soft and coarse, carried weight. She spoke in an old tongue, the kind only the Fireborne amongst the party knew.

Her companion had been among the risen - one of the bandits, or perhaps a victim - it wasn’t clear. All that mattered was that he returned wrong. And she couldn’t bring herself to strike. In the end, someone else did.

She didn’t scream. Only watched as the fire took him.

And she knew the stone, its value and its purpose. But she did not covet it.

She might've known more. Might’ve said more. But faith held her doubts and her tongue.

“It shouldst have been cast into the ash… with all else that bore his name.
Yet by thy grace, it hath found its way into another's hands now. Let it not be for ill.”
- mutterings of the flame’s daughter
