In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (150 words minimum)
Parse offers a baleful look, fingers twisting together in a cat’s cradle, minus the string. “I’m terribly normal, actually,” he says, in a thin and fluctuating voice. “But assuming I wasn’t, for a moment, I would possibly be somewhat nervous of all these questions. The traveling is typical for for Falstoners, I thought.” It sounds almost but not quite apologetic. His eyes dart across the other passengers in the overcrowded wagon. The bells on his sleeves jingle miserably, setting a terrible backing sound to the creak and bounce of wheels over rough stones. "I haven't gotten my fill of unfortunate roads, yet."
As it doesn’t seem like the woman is keen to move to other topics, he relents. “Looking for pay. Lots of people moving through. Better for my line of work.” There is a second, somewhat uncomfortable silence. “I work as a fool. Yes- I do know most people don’t get paid for that. That’s very funny. Thank you.” He turns his head, then struggles up to his feet. “A pleasure, again,” he offers, disingenuous, and makes his way to the end of the wagon, hopping down to walk aside it. Jingling all the way.
