Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
He furrowed his brow - "Hmm? Why have I..?" - with another blink a spark in his mind, dulled by the journey, finally seemed to return - "Oh... Why have I come... here?"
He thought back to his home - Oldley a village laying somewhere remote part of the Valkian land. Life there was good enough, if humble. But then a few harsh winters came, and afterwards a few meager harvests. After his father died the plot of land was taken over to be held by a new master - Edwin, his father's eldest son - as was a custom in this part of Midlands. A fate of a fieldhand at mercy of his brother's bread didn't seem to him too bright. And - having to truly admit - he wasn't too laborious of a churl. In the new, harder times maybe not worth the trouble of sharing the more-and-more scant table with. His brother and his brother's wife seemed to agree - and didn't make secret out of it.
So he left - with little more than a shirt on his back. He went from place to place, hiring himself where he could, to get a bite to eat and a place to sleep on some pile of straw. Eventually he made his way to Mariza, a great city, kind of which he never saw before. Like many, he thought it might bring to him a promise of a better life. It didn't. The bustling streets he once marveled at soon filled him with revulsion, and the smell was horrible (and it seemed to smell worse with every coming day). Any work he could find was hard, masters cruel, coin sparse. Cost of getting by seemed unbearable. So he left. But he soon had to admit - it wasn't this that made him leave - or at least not just this. Some things, things wasn't proud of happened and he had to flee - he shook his head, wanting not to think of it more.
Looking at the women he mustered an answer after a moment that felt like a hour "Just wanted to make some coin, yea" - but was this all what made him cross the accursed bogs of Rulan, and this great wall - put up there heavens-know-why-and-by-who? He knew he couldn't - or could he? - return back home, he was too proud to come back with nothing, and if like nothing happened. And there seemed no way to become something more than a pauper up there, in the Midlands. land and coin were sparse to share. And eager hands too many to reach for it.
So when he heard about the land beyond the great wall. A land rid of her people by some strange doom. It seemed like he could make here more than just a coin, or two. Maybe. The riches left heft here, riches unclaimed spoke to him as if taken from some old-wives-tale.
