In-Character
Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in. “Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

“Yes—I mean…
She flinched. “No. Not talking to you. Just thinking. Out loud. Again.”

The blind girl’s pale blue eyes didn’t settle on anything in particular. But they shifted—quietly, curiously—toward voices, footsteps, even the sway of grass. In her lap sat a blade, wrapped in worn cloth, a soft threadbare knot pinched between her fingers. She didn’t speak often. It was easier to talk to the wind, or the stars, or something else that wouldn’t try to answer back.

"Sorry," she added, tone sheepish. "I do that. Talk to myself. Or to the sky. I’m not crazy, though. Not really." A pause. "Maybe a little."

There was a scent in the breeze— salt, and crushed flowers. Her shoulders relaxed.

"I’m from Koram. Mori, specifically. You know… the beaches, pearl divers, fish no bigger than a finger. The wind there smells like tuna and burnt oil." She smiled faintly, like it ached a bit to remember. "It's not an easy place. The people, much like my family are proud—warlike even. But, I’m nothing like that. I'm fragile, … useless, especially since I can’t see. I don’t belong there... Even my father thinks that way,"

She kept quiet before speaking, softer:
"I left because of the Aedall."

Her fingers tightened around the blade wrap. "I know people say they’re gone. After the Great Disappearance, everything changed. That they fell, or… just stopped caring." She drew in a shaky breath. "But I kept dreaming about them. It never scared me—it just made me wonder." She pressed a hand to her chest, her voice rising with sudden emotion. "My family says they disappeared because they refused to change. But, I think… I think they disappeared because they couldn’t become something they didn’t believe in!"

"When I did my pilgrimage. At Iria." She gestured vaguely upward.
"My father said it’d change me. Sent me up alone. But, he forgot I was blind." She laughed, dryly. "Said the mountain would guide me. That I’d find clarity."

Her thumb brushed the frayed edge of the cloth. "All I found was moss. Bark. Wet stone. And the echo of my own voice asking things the wind didn’t answer."

The ceremonial blade in her lap was polished, unused. A family heirloom. It bore the seal of her family’s ancestral tie. "He told me to carry our name forward," she said, voice distant. "But what if forward isn’t in Mori?" She paused. "On the way here, I stopped in the Mist Isles to gather some items, but..." Her voice trailed off, and her lips pressed into a thin line. A beat passed.

"It felt strange. Uncomfortable."

She glanced off to the side, like she wasn’t fully speaking to anyone in the room.
"There’s something in the Southern Reach," she murmured. "I don’t know all the stories—just the ones that were passed down. But I feel it." Turning toward the woman’s voice, she gave a shy, crooked smile. "Maybe it’s here. In the Reach..."

Character Name: Li Shanxuan

Character Race: Arsa Sidhe

Character Age: 23

Brief Physical Description: A woman standing at 5'5", Shanxuan has very light blue eyes—almost milky in color, likely due to her blindness. She often claims she can talk to the stars, though even she isn’t sure if it’s real or just something she likes to believe. There’s always a faint sadness in her expression, not because she’s upset, but because that’s simply her natural resting face. Her hair is a soft, almost white color, with the ends dyed a gentle light pink gradient—something she chose herself. She didn’t want to blend in too easily. She wanted to stand out, even if just a little. Her frame is thin and delicate, almost fragile in appearance, and it’s clear she wasn’t built for fighting. Her complexion is noticeably light, more so than most, making her stand out even further among a crowd.
