Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

“Hard ta tell whether I’m excited or nervous,” Hilda responds with a smile of her own to the woman. “I came here from a rural fishing village between the Pearl Coast and Luul’yare within the Mist Isles. Used to hear songs 'n stories of adventures from travelers that stopped by. Figured wanted some of that excitement for myself! Most folk only arrived cause a storm drifted em off course. Like ta think Siren's lookin' out for us when we get lonely.”
She glances down, tightening the hand wraps around her knuckles. “I’m not leaving much behind. Closest thing I had to family was my master. Retired member of the Sea-Heart Disciples, became the local shrinekeeper after settling away from all the hustle bustle of the order. I just so happen ta be left inna basket right front of his shrine an' taught me everything I know; shaping me to take his place one day as shrinekeeper. But…on the day the title was supposed ta be passed down ta me… I wasn’t ready.” Hilda’s brows furrow, her tone tinged with disappointment. “Before I could become the shrinekeeper, the spirits themselves hadda accept me. They'd gather to sing their song, an' I was ta answer with a dance, one that would reflect both my understandin' of their call an' my own spirit. But when I danced…th'rhythm wasn’t truly mine. River’s course already been carved by my master and all I did was follow along. Every step I did was perfect, every motion precise… yet it lacked anythin' that was...ME. Saw how truly...empty I was an' Master told me I wasn't ready. What good is a song already sung, or a play already written?”
Thumping the back of her head gently against the wagon’s frame, she sighs. “I’m hoping that maybe moving out 'ere I can find my own rhythm. Be my own person, be a more complete person. Maybe then the spirits will acknowledge me.” After a moment of quiet sulking, she steadies herself with a deep breath. “That's enough 'bout me....why don’t you tell me about yourself Miss?”
