In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
I glance at the woman, her smile kind but curious. My fingers drum against the worn wood of the wagon before I speak, my voice quieter than I intend.
“I was raised on stories of my people’s greatness, though most of them were spoken with bitterness rather than pride. The Arsa Sidhe once believed ourselves eternal, enlightened above all others – but The Collapse proved otherwise. Greed and arrogance tore apart what was meant to be everlasting, and in its wake, we scattered. Some became Korami warriors, hardened by war. Others, like the Aedall, built their lives in the Southern Reach. And then... they vanished. No fire, no battlefield, no bones. Just silence. The Great Disappearance still lingers like a splinter in our history. Every elder I knew spoke of it as a reminder of what we had lost – and a warning of what we could lose again.
My gaze drifts toward the horizon, where the plains blur into the faint outline of The Wall. “I grew up in its shadow. To the Valks, it is a monument to their strength and order, a symbol of their empire. But to me, it always stood as a barrier – not of stone, but of memory. It kept the Reach distant, like a forbidden word on one’s tongue. Yet the wall was not built to keep out monsters; it was built to keep out my kin. That truth gnawed at me.
I return my eyes to hers, steady now. “So I come not for gold, nor glory, but for understanding. If the Reach holds the truth of our vanishing, or of the Spire that rises impossibly toward the heavens, then I will face its dangers. Better to step beyond the wall and seek answers than to remain caged by its shadow.
