To all who read this missive, it was written with intent for reconciliation between the Council and Van Pelt gang, as well as to inform the public with all due transparency as to what happened to the forces of the Requital and the staff. This missive has been penned as a joint effort between the Council and Van Pelt gang, and has not gone up without satisfaction on both sides as to the content. This missive will go over the events of the day the Requital was sunk, efforts on part of the council, and punishment for pertinent members of the Van Pelt Gang who were involved with the plan.

Several weeks ago, the council and several diplomats had gathered to meet with King Dask and his Captains. The intent was to make peace and try to form an alliance, as King Dask would be a good ally to have. After speaking for roughly an hour, King Dask revealed that he had hired Van Pelt to locate and secure the staff for the Requital. It was seemingly an act of direct treason, and Van Pelt was spoken to by two members of the Council, Lady Penelope Periwinkle, and Ser Adrian Pandion, after the meeting. Over the course of the meeting, the town was threatened by King Dask, with threats of etheric barrage. He also made clear, however, that several unknown members of the town had been consistently making threats and advances on the Requital outside the Council’s knowledge. Tensions at the meeting were high, but ultimately the Requital was brought to our side, and was willing to allow us to bring forth allies who would help to retake the Isle of Eldrith in the north. There were allies made in the Empire who are willing to assist in the recovery of the Isle of Eldrith for those who were still alive, and to assist in maintaining peace between the Empire and the Kingdom of Eldrith. If there was any doubt in the mind of the council and those assembled that King Dask wouldn’t keep his word, the meeting would not have ended where it did.

Van Pelt's dealing with the King was one bound in a magical spell, the details of which he was not made aware of besides the fact consequences would come to the one who broke the pact, he was as well provided with a trinket that let him track the staff with his mutant abilities. With King Dask's actions emboldening the hunt, unsatisfactory talks with individuals of the Council and a seeming doom approaching in two weeks' time, Van Pelt acted.

Individuals of the Gang were made aware, yet not the whole of it, it was not as organized an effort. Afore much planning could come, approaching the site of the Siren's shrine knowing of an attack by the Drowned Mariner's undead, the mutant senses recalled the scent of the warstaff and, seeing an opportunity, those present of the Van Pelt Gang hastily made to take it. Devolving into violence among townsfolk, one that had left Van Pelt far too wounded for a retreat, he made an accord with the Sirens to be brought out to sea and destroy the fleet with the weapon of coral that had spread around his body. A great monstrosity set the waters alight, swallowing whole not only the King who sought that terrible power, but the innocent people of his lost land as well. No member of the Van Pelt Gang has or will tell you this was not the case.

To decriminalize and acknowledge their parts in the actions of Van Pelt at the Siren ceremony, the Van Pelt Gang has agreed to turn in those who acted and conspired with Van Pelt. If ever Van Pelt returns, he shall be subject to the same brand of justice. The Van Pelt Gang will also be required to submit for permission to pursue foreign bounties or make plans upon them. In turn, the council has agreed not to pursue to disband the Van Pelt Gang, and will allow them turn themselves in after this missive has been made public. Both sides have agreed to pen this missive together to give the town a full picture of the situation of what happened that day.

This missive is to paint a broader picture of Van Pelt rather than to allow him be framed strictly as heroic martyr or devious terrorist. Van Pelt was a human who allowed fear to rule him and he killed many innocent people that day, as well as acted against the town. The council was elected and selected people to assist with making peace. Van Pelt and his gang were not. This missive serves to put the information in the hands of the public and decide on how to feel about the man.
