In-Character
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sitting near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in. “Tell me, my dear—why have you come to the Reach?”

“I want to honor my ancestors.”
The ashen-skinned halfling peered down through narrowed eyes, gazing through deep ebony eyelashes upon the old woman. Her gaze held palpable skepticism. Her mother had taught her to be wary and it seemed to show through in almost all of her actions. The longer the old woman’s gaze lingered upon her, the more her posture tensed and the more unwilling she was to explain her motives.
But something about this woman told her she wasn’t in any kind of danger. Something told her that she could speak freely, without worry of any prying eyes nearby. Mentioning her ancestors had earned an interested look from the old woman. Those who sat nearby were occupied or asleep. No threat… meant it was okay to speak.
“They were Fireborne Arsa Sidhe... and Greatlings, too. Each of them became tellurgists and followed the path of the Fire Dragon. I want to as well—to keep their memories alive.” A beat. Her ancestors had all earned their wings… and now, it was her time to shine.
The Fire Dragon was something that the young halfling had only heard of through word of mouth. She had never taken an adventure with any of her family before—her single mother Liellach, who walked the path of the fable while she was raising Zhala, never let her join the quests. This had sparked jealousy from a young age, instilling a feeling of needing to follow in her ancestors’ footsteps that she had never been able to overcome. While she understood her mother’s desire to protect her—after all, the Ashlands were an extremely dangerous place for outsiders like them and Liellach had no partner to take care of Zhala when she was gone—oftentimes her protection felt like suffocation. They lived in Port Sulferm, close to the merchant hub of the city. Zhala earned her skills in diplomacy here, working as a merchant for her family’s forging company, The Des’Nox Forge. Here, she undertook many small voyages to deliver shipments of weapons, getting to mingle with many others who lived in the Ashlands.
The first time Zhala ever participated in the Unity of the Flames, she was one of few selected to lead her tribe into battle. She had proved her battle prowess time and time again. Eventually, this gave her mother the courage she needed to let Zhala traverse the path of the Fire Dragon. Only a few days prior to this one, she had bid farewell to her mother and departed from the ports for what she assumed to be the last time. She hoped one day to return to the Ashlands, to see Liellach again, but her curiosity pulled her toward the Reach faster than she could begin to feel homesick.
… She had been thinking for too long, hadn’t she? …
Slowly drifting back into reality, Zhala noticed the old woman’s attention was no longer on her. The ashen-skinned lady let out a quiet sigh as the carriage rolled on. She turned away from the old woman and gazed out of the window.
A fresh start…

Character Name: Viil’kalze’Zhala Liellach Des’Nox
Character Race: Half-Arsa Sidhe, Half-Greatling
Character Age: 30
Brief Physical Description: Bestowed by heritage a height of 73, Zhala towers over most outside of it. Her eyes are a brilliant shade of lavender, so bright that she has been able to convince people that they glow in the dark. They don't - but Zhala enjoys the look on people's faces when she tells them. Her skin is a deep shade of grey, just ashen enough to hide the cool undertones of her visage. When embarrassed, her Greatling and Arsa Sidhe heritage works against her. Thin skin and thick blood make her entire face and the tips of her ears flush a deep, mesmerizing shade of violet. Her hair, a harsh shade of raven black, reaches to her lower back. She always wears a crown braid, it falling down her back upon connecting at the back of her head. Her hair is coarse in texture and hard to maintain, leading to her rarely changing its style. When not in polished armor, she tends to wear loose clothing, something she could never do in the danger of the Ashlands.
