The Reach's Book Club

Book Club & Club Rules

Hosted in the library within the Reach and founded by Meriel Noctis - this club is able to be joined by any that are interested in learning or sharing their stories! However, there are a few rules that any in the book club must abide:

• Respectful Listening; Everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts, without judgment or interruption.
• No Rushing; Everyone reads at their own pace! Be mindful of this, as some are not as well-read or practiced. 
• No Judgment on Genre; When sharing or reading, all forms of literature are appreciated. Whether this be an epic poem, collection of fables, or short stories.
• Careful Handling; All scrolls, books, and so on are to be treated with utmost care. They are to be kept clean and returned without damage.
• Sharing Knowledge; Members of the club are expected to share their findings with others, when it comes to writings or scholarly pursuits. However, if considered detrimental to spread the knowledge of, the member has a responsibility to ensure it doesn't become dangerous to others to know.

Activities of the Book Club

• Creating Stories; Literature is able to be submitted to the book club for filing, and may be rewarded in crowns or other material objects based on depth and insight. These books are reviewed by the Book Club in a meaningful manner, then discussed among members.
• Letter Writing; Perhaps a more simpler activity done on a member's own time, they are encouraged to write letters either to one another or to another person in the Reach. These may be read aloud to book club during meetings, or privately given forth to the recipients. Notably, these letters should be constructive and heartfelt; and never demeaning or disrespectful.
• Creative Retellings; Members are encouraged to re-tell a portion of books in their own way - or share poems, experiences from adventures, and so on. As if reimagining the scene, and inviting other members to contribute to it. 
• Preserving Knowledge; The book club, when opportunities arise, are encouraged to group together for archaeological or scholarly pursuits to record and experiment with. However, these activities should be mindful of the environment and not destroy it for the sake of knowledge.
• Teaching Others; For those that struggle with literacy or may not have much exposure to reading, the book club hosts classes to help with languages or reading comprehension.
• And More; All members are given a voice and opportunity to speak up on what they'd like to see the club do! Whether this be simple cleanings of the library, organizing the books, or hosting writing competitions - any sort of activities are welcome.

Joining the Book Club

People across all ages and skill levels are able to join the book club. All that is required is that they respect the rules as previously mentioned! While members are free to bring their friends to activities, sometimes when there are limits on attendance, members will typically take priority. If someone is interested in joining, please take a pamphlet and fill it out with name, level of reading skill, and what you'd like to achieve by joining. If you know someone that may be interested but cannot read well, please help them fill out the pamphlet so they may be included!

"Hello! I am a lover of poetry and historical tales, as well as educational texts! I speak and read common and giant fluently, I am conversational in the language of Fey, and I know sparely little Sidhe, mostly enough to check contract details!"

"I would love to have a group to gain an appreciation for more fables and folktales with, as I believe my preferences have lended me little in the way of knowing the delights of fables and fantasies rather than cold knowledge!"

A pamphlet is taken and soon returned with a name written down.

"Myra. Can read Elven and Common. Poetry."

There is no further detail, but the handwriting is neat.

A quick scrawl would be written in the pamphlet -

"I am a skilled reader, and hope to achieve a better understanding of myself - and one another, by joining."

Signed below,

Eithna leaves a short note and elegant signature on the pamphlet.

"We have some poetry and tales to share."

Rhutelan takes a pamphlet, filling it out with foppish cursive.

"Rhutelan Kinhhalt; I'm a performer by trade, but I've a keen interest in the stories and tales of people. I read and write well, but I'm afraid I'm not much of a teacher."

The doctor pinched a pamphlet for himself, filling it out with ink and a quill, before submitting.

'Konrad Radziwill, excellent reader of Common and some proficiency in the Fey language. Interest in authoring.'

It is written in a clean cursive, still legible for those unfamiliar with the style.

Rott, capable of literacy in both Common and the Giant tongue. I perform much research in the pursuit of metallurgy, as well as a minor interest in the arcane.

Another pamphlet is filled, the text within written using common ink and clean, easy-to-read hand.

I am a profoundly deaf Elf of the Korami, and I navigate the world through reading and writing when I cannot rely on Handsign.
Over time, this has sharpened my skills in both. I am fluent in both Common and Elven, and these languages have — through pages — opened up new worlds to me.

I write to you now because I wish to join the Book Club. My love for learning runs deep, and I hope to not only gain knowledge but also share my own discoveries
with others who cherish stories and knowledge as much as I do. In particular, I have a fascination with the night sky and its constellations, the tales woven into its stars.
I humbly ask for the chance to be part of your Club.
