In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

A dismissive wave of the hand comes first to the question. Them? Nervous? Oh, absolutely not! Though, perhaps that much is still a lie they simply wish to tell themself. Despite their decent experience with travelling around as part of their chosen path, there was always a twinge of anxiety that followed them around. Bad luck seemed to follow them around, after all (though that seems to simply be coincidental)
It takes them a while longer before they answer.
"Curiosity," Sodalite eventually responds carefully in written words. Quite neat for the speed of which they wrote. "I hear many tales of the world, and I aim to gather as many as I can. To learn the stories of the world is my calling, and maybe even chase after a few myself."
Of course, their answer was played up a little bit to sound of a grander purpose over simply wishing to get out of their home town. Rulan was quiet. Simple, yes; ideal if they weren't looking for something more interesting to do. Because what point was there to be a cotton farmer like their sole father, or live the dangerous life of a mercenary flitting about, when they could earn some coin (and renown) through performing? And, if careful, a little pickpocketing every now and then. There was a whole world out there over cotton and vineyards to explore after all.
The woman gives a soft nod in interest. "And what stories have you heard so far?"
The bard leans back in their seat with a thoughtful gesture, closing their eyes a moment before they return to writing.
"There's quite the few that I could name," they start. "I'm more of a musician and occasional magician than a storyteller, though." It was quite difficult to recite tales when you were born voiceless, after all.
But it didn't mean they didn't at least keep a written record for themself.
Sodalite puts a finger up in signal to give them a moment, digging through their pack and pulling out a separate journal. They flip through the pages, scanning the words with a finger to guide their eyes on the page before moving the book closer for the lady to see. One small paragraph was titled "The Lucky Coins"
They say that there are coins that enabled the rich to gain their wealth through supernatural luck; the people say that should you manage to pilfer one then you, too, could be as rich. There's stories of a mysterious person who offers a game of renown to willing gamblers. Though not without consequence. What consequences though, I haven't found out yet.
Nobody knows if that whole thing was true, of course. And they give a small shrug when the other asks. She remarks that the consequences are probably nothing good; before reading a different entry.
There have been reports quite the while back of a group of witches appearing around. The Portents, they're called by people. Appearing in coverns, unidentified wagons... they granted wishes at prices just like those old stories that you'd tell to scare the children, yet somehow this seems rather real. They say this group only present themself to a specific few who know what they seek. It's been a long while since I've heard of them, though. I have nary a clue to the truth of it. Not a single rumor regarding it for the past few years. Maybe it'll crop up again sometime?
"Witches? I do recall hearing about those in my youth!" The bard flashes an equally amused smile back as she continues, "I never believed them myself. It always sounds too convenient, doesn't it?" Maybe it was all just a popular lie all in the end, like how many of those myths and such go. But hey, it made for good entertainment nonetheless. The woman quickly flips through the book and pauses at one of the random entries.
"The Fey Coterie?" she mutters to herself after another few beats of silence. Sodalite's gaze goes from her briefly and then toward their written page. Patrons, magic— they only heard small bits about it when they were being mentored all those years ago. It was quite a recent entry, detailing the three Fey who made up the Coterie. They only gathered their names and some minor details at best in the span of writing most of the page; but Third-After-Rain, Baron of Puddles was the one they had the most interest in nonetheless. Surely, they could provide ample enough entertainment for him…?
The woman shakes her head, flipping back a few pages to where other tales are written. "You've most definitely kept my interest so far," the bard looks back up as the woman speaks with another gentle smile. "I do hope you gather more tales— perhaps we shall even meet again one day and you can tell me more!"
Sodalite blinks once, twice. Sheepishly scratching the back of their head with a small smile. Ah, well. Maybe one day, they guess.
