In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Inigo stares at the woman for a moment, unsure of whether or not they should respond. Not everyone he’s met has been so kind but scanning her reveals nothing dangerous and the silence of this ride is eating at their sanity. Inigo straightens out and lower my mask.
“You could say it’s a personal journey.”
It wasn’t a lie, they chose to come out here after his parents gave him a bit of an ultimatum. It was always family first with Inigo's people, the Fireborne, but most everyone doesn’t recognize the poisonous progression that can cause. Which is being unfair to them. Ugh, fill the silence again. He coughs a little and shifts, kind of awkwardly.
“Uh, sorry that really doesn’t answer your question, haha”
He laughs awkwardly, filling the area with a tension that needs removing.
“Uh, I’m on a bit of a spiritual journey from my homeland: the Ashlands. It’s about everything that's in the portrait. Which isn’t to say that it’s ugly. The vistas could take your breath away, including the smoke in the air.”
Should’ve at least done the awkward laugh there, idiot. They realize they might not have been blinking normally and blink a few times to try and normalize. His hands, which he's also forgotten to move, adjust towards the center of his body, where they sit when Inigo doesn't know where else to put them.
“But my people and I have a very strong connection to the Spirit of the Fire Dragon. It’s bones in the Ashlands, truly a magnificent sight, are the locus of our religious practices, though altars to the Spirit can be found in even some of the homes of the Fireborne.”
The question. He's not answering the question, back on track Inigo. Blink, blink. Big breath in and out.
“I’m rekindling my connection to the great Spirit through an amorphous pilgrimage across the world, and as I was travelling I heard of the great mysteries of the spire and was drawn in an attempt to rekindle through the great Spirit’s intelligence. Those wishing to prove their intelligence have to find a worthy mystery, something shrouded in darkness to reveal through the Spirit’s light.”
Honestly that’s the heroics talking, he might just stake myself against every threat and prove their honor is true that way. Nuance was not his families finest skill, despite their attentiveness to priestly duties in the Dragon’s Maw. Inigo took that for granted until they found him lost in the moonlights great visage, surrounded by darkness. The superstition that was shrouded in a darkness of its own, finally revealed to light as they stared at him with such sad eyes. Maybe they’re right though, maybe The Moon’s divinity has led him down a dark path. During this silence it's all far stiller, like they've forgotten to move again but he just doesn't know what to do with themself.
“So yeah… that’s why I’m here. Uh, what about you?
