(Max. 1) Were you referred by someone? No

I’m Nyx, Im a playwright, though I dabble in most kinda of art, and I’ve been doing rp since I was 13.

In-Character

Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium.  Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

Inigo stares at the woman for a moment, unsure of whether or not they should respond. Not everyone he’s met has been so kind but scanning her reveals nothing dangerous and the silence of this ride is eating at their sanity. Inigo straightens out and lower my mask.

“You could say it’s a personal journey.”

It wasn’t a lie, they chose to come out here after his parents gave him a bit of an ultimatum. It was always family first with Inigo's people, the Fireborne, but most everyone doesn’t recognize the poisonous progression that can cause. Which is being unfair to them. Ugh, fill the silence again. He coughs a little and shifts, kind of awkwardly.

“Uh, sorry that really doesn’t answer your question, haha”

He laughs awkwardly, filling the area with a tension that needs removing.

“Uh, I’m on a bit of a spiritual journey from my homeland: the Ashlands. It’s about everything that's in the portrait. Which isn’t to say that it’s ugly. The vistas could take your breath away, including the smoke in the air.”

Should’ve at least done the awkward laugh there, idiot. They realize they might not have been blinking normally and blink a few times to try and normalize. His hands, which he's also forgotten to move, adjust towards the center of his body, where they sit when Inigo doesn't know where else to put them.

“But my people and I have a very strong connection to the Spirit of the Fire Dragon. It’s bones in the Ashlands, truly a magnificent sight, are the locus of our religious practices, though altars to the Spirit can be found in even some of the homes of the Fireborne.”

The question. He's not answering the question, back on track Inigo. Blink, blink. Big breath in and out.

“I’m rekindling my connection to the great Spirit through an amorphous pilgrimage across the world, and as I was travelling I heard of the great mysteries of the spire and was drawn in an attempt to rekindle through the great Spirit’s intelligence. Those wishing to prove their intelligence have to find a worthy mystery, something shrouded in darkness to reveal through the Spirit’s light.”

Honestly that’s the heroics talking, he might just stake myself against every threat and prove their honor is true that way. Nuance was not his families finest skill, despite their attentiveness to priestly duties in the Dragon’s Maw. Inigo took that for granted until they found him lost in the moonlights great visage, surrounded by darkness. The superstition that was shrouded in a darkness of its own, finally revealed to light as they stared at him with such sad eyes. Maybe they’re right though, maybe The Moon’s divinity has led him down a dark path. During this silence it's all far stiller, like they've forgotten to move again but he just doesn't know what to do with themself.

“So yeah… that’s why I’m here. Uh, what about you?

Hello! My name is Blinx, and I'll be handling your whitelist application.

First, I've got a question about this passage:
"Nuance was not my families finest skill, despite their attentiveness to priestly duties in the Dragon’s Maw. I took that for granted until they found me lost in the moonlights great visage, surrounded by darkness. Superstition was shrouded in a darkness of its own. Maybe they’re right though, maybe It’s divinity has led me down a dark path."
What darkness is Inigo referring to, here? Is this intended as some kind of supernatural happening, or something more mundane his family took as an omen? I'm not clear on the intent behind it, so if you could provide clarification through an edit or direct reply we'll be able to proceed.

Next, as per the Roleplay Standards section of our Rules page, to minimize character bleed we request the following:
"Try to adopt a 3rd-person voice “She, Him, Character-Name” rather than a 1st-person voice “I, Me” in a scene."
And as a result I'm going to ask the reply here be re-written in third person, rather than first. "I" > "He/Inigo", and so forth.

Otherwise, nicely done with incorporating the lore into Inigo's dialogue and narration (and his last name)! If you can leave a reply here to let me know when you've made the requested changes and/or to provide narration, I'll be notified and can take another look quickly.

I'm so sorry about use of First person, I must've misread that and got it backwards because I originally wrote it in third person! Sometimes it's only rocks up here. Secondly darkness is a physical thing in the first part, the darkness of night which is tied into the superstition of the Fireborne, but the second one is more metaphorical, a darkness in the sense that his own belief that their family wouldn't care that heavily and then they effectively exiled them until further notice. The line is meant to be blurry for the sake that he believes his love of the great moon is a corruption so maybe that darkness of night is also a "mystical force" that draws him into it and also the darkness of his family and lineage hiding the truth of their feelings much like how his internal monologue differs greatly from what they say. There wasn't really a place to explain all of this in the application obviously, but it's all quite physical in a sense of "The Dark" or "Obfuscation" while holding deeply important metaphorical space for the character. No actual mysticality yet.

Fixed everything up and changed some of the wording.

Nice! Thank you for the perspective revisions, that part of the application is satisfactory.

I like linking the moon to darkness, a symbol of the night, thematically--I just have one note! In Avalore, there are actually two moons which create phases by regularly eclipsing each other. Additionally, while less explicit, there's a thematic tie noted on the same page between the Sun + Moons and the Phoenix and Equinox fable, of which the Equinox touches upon some similar themes. I'll have to ask that the reference to the moon itself be revised to reflect the two moons in lore, but otherwise, everything on the application is good to go -- nothing else will need revisions unless you have anything you'd like to add!

Before I open this, I'd just like to say I deeply appreciate the back and forth and am in no way trying to "fight" any of what you are saying, though I am really starting to wish there was more room on the application to talk about stuff like this ooc because of the nature of many characters not speaking exactly what they believe. Though there are two moons, I was playing with the idea of Inigo ONLY liking the Light Moon and disliking the Dark Moon, the celestial dance be damned. This is again connected into the ideas of superstition that he has grown up with and the ideas his family has placed upon him: darkness is a corrupting force and should be treated as such. This makes the idea of The Moon(tm) into the Light Moon and The Dark Moon it's corrupting influence, the divinity that draws him into the night and the thing that makes the night darker. I'm realizing now I should've spoken on this in my last post, that's my bad, I don't know why I thought any of this was clear but it was a little late for me so not all gears were firing. Inigo believes, though he is wrong, that there is one Moon and the other celestial body is some evil force attempting to hide it. If that doesn't work let me know. On the topic of Phoenix and Equinox: I'd looked at it in regards to the character but I think that'll be something they discover along the path and maybe have heard small things about but doesn't greatly know of it yet.

There are channels in the Discord for newcomers to ask questions related to whitelisting and applications even before verification, if you want a faster response time! Alternatively, my DMs are generally open for queries relating to whitelists or general server help as a Mentor. Ultimately, that is what the purpose of a whitelist comes back to -- a demonstration of lore comprehension, even if it means narration or dialogue may need to be more revealing than a character would otherwise get.

That being said, so long as the intention behind referencing one moon as Inigo is that it's one of the two moons, you're welcome to message in the Discord proper if you have any other queries, as you've addressed all my feedback satisfactorily. His ideas are thematically coherent as interpretations on your part of the server's lore, even if his own perspective of the world is limited!
