In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
She turns to look at the woman, her own grin like the cracks in an old oak tree instead of a soft smile. She tilts her head, hair falling as she stares with one bright eye. It's clear that she tries to open the other, the skin pulling at the scarred area, but she does not make any mention of this attempt.
"I'm looking for someone," she said says simply. A little giggle escapes from her mouth as she twists her body, leaning down with her torso against her thighs. It's... abnormally flexible, the movement. "Someone very special. I'm sure you'd understand."
She sits up, then, without warning to stare at the woman again. Her eye grows wider, somehow, grin stretching to match the stare. Another giggle emerges. "So important. It's almost... disappointing. You know, this place, it's... interesting. Nothing like Fallstone, truly." And--well, she preferred Fallstone, to be truthful. There was a community there, an aspect of understanding that passed through them all. Though, yes, Kitty thought herself more of the mischievous type, she heeded the warnings of those elder to her to keep herself in-check. She, like many, had been burned by such trickery before, and should be cautious. She loves Fallstone, as well, the rolling Steppes that seem to go on forever. For a moment she can imagine a life without the debts she's accumulated. A life without the people she despises, and even the people she loves. A peaceful one. And then the caravan begins its march again, and she's reminded that she has a duty. A duty that brings her to the Reach.
Kitty flips her hair and waves a hand as she then shifts her position to sit upside-down, legs dangling above her as her head hangs from the seat. She lets out a sigh, but it's difficult to discern if it's one of boredom or one of annoyance. "I never understand why anyone would ever want to leave. Let alone one of us--" the giggles she keeps allowing to escape seem nearly involuntary, at this point. "Especially not after the chances we've been given. One look at us and--well, I bet you've thought of scooting down the way for a few moments there!"
The next sound is decidedly not a giggle, but a pained little wheeze as she deflates against the seat and re-configures her position to sit upright again. She reaches up behind her head, twiddling with a green ribbon that ties one of her pigtails up--it's patterned, slightly, with the impression of the petals of a four-leaf-clover. If she's asked, it's just a memento, but with the way she tucks it so neatly in her hair, that's clearly a bluff. It is not simply a good-luck charm, and if it was that would mean she had completed a Trial, and she hadn't even gotten close yet. It was a reminder to her, one that she cannot forget. Because without Lady Luck, to her, she would not have gotten this far. Many things in life are fated, but even more are based on the flip of a coin somewhere unseen. Her survival was lucky. Her gaining a family was even more of a chance scenario. If fate is immovable, luck is unstoppable, and the combination of two is the irrationality that Kitty believes she lives in. "But even if Luck smiled on him, he took it for granted, and now here we are. I'm disappointed. But--"
She pauses for a moment, and then shrugs, poking at the wood of the wagon seat just to find a spot where the wood splinters upward. The movement seems... purposeful. In reality, she's trying to pick the wood out, trying to see if the bark beneath her tights matches the wood of the wagon. It's a habit she does often--one that follows her from childhood. It is, in essence, an attempt to feel natural in the face of the circumstance of her existence. She finds herself drawn to knife-throwing because of the same reason. She supposes it's mostly for the act of creating the targets, not so much attacking. In another life, maybe she'd be a woodcarver, a carpenter, someone who feels at home among the lumbar and leaves. But here? Now? She finds what comfort she can in the act of creating a simple target. It makes people excited, and that truly is all she can ask for.
"If he didn't, I wouldn't get to go off and have such fun, now would I?"
