The Typhon Tournament
Started by Pyrias

THE TOURNAMENT of
TYPHON

Spiretown Developments

For several months now, the price of timber had steadily climbed—or perhaps, depending on whom one asked, fortune had simply favored the merchants and lumberjacks of the Reach. The Seneschalty, under the direction of the Lady Steward, had been purchasing wood in considerable quantity. Wagons of cut timber rolled through Spiretown’s gates day after day, and those who worked the forests or the sawpits found their purses heavier than usual.

South of the town proper, a wide swath of woodland had been cleared to expand the fairgrounds. Where trees once stood, laborers now raised the sturdy frameworks of tournament lists and marked out orderly rows where tents might be pitched. The work was constant, and those seeking honest coin rarely struggled to find it.

Alongside the construction came rumors.

Word spread that a guest of honor would attend the tournament to be held in Typhon. With the announcement came strict notice: no weapons were to be brought upon the grounds, save for those carried by militia, town guards, approved levies, and other officers assigned to their proper posts. The added security stirred speculation throughout Spiretown. Some whispered that the precautions were meant for a particularly important visitor. Others argued it was only sensible, given the recent disappearances of Spirefolk and the unrest that had begun to trouble the city-state.

Before long, however, the purpose of the preparations became clear.

A grand festival and tournament would soon be held—both to celebrate the Lady Steward’s birthday and to serve as a gathering ground for foreign dignitaries across the Reach. What began as quiet construction in the forest now promised to become one of the season’s most notable events.

Volunteers and Workers Wanted

It’s announced to be a two week long spectacle, events running across the extent of Typhon. As a result, many volunteers, performers, and contestants are wanted.

  • Food vendors (to run taverns and provide drinks, etc.)
  • Smiths and artisans (item descriptions written and formatted)
  • Revelry runners (running attractions and drinking contests)
  • Officers and guards (patrols and ensuring no disputes break out)
  • Bards, dancers, and performers (to play during the concert and opening)
  • Medical support (on standby for the combat competitions or any accidents)
  • Heralds (Refereeing combat fights and providing commentary on them, alongside announcing the teams/competitors)

All volunteers will be paid for their service (alongside XP), amount depending on how many days worked. Please send notice to the townhall’s clerks and secretariats if you are interested in any of the above (reply to the post with what you’re interested in, and the days you can attend. Schedule is below).

Fairground Rules:

  • No weapons are permitted within the tent grounds or fair pavilions. Only approved contestants within the lists, or those authorized by the guard, militia officers, or designated officials may carry arms.
  • All bouts and contests are to be conducted in the spirit of competition. Strikes meant to maim, sabotage equipment, or interference of matches will see you removed from the grounds.
  • Do not damage the lists, stalls, tents, or decorations.
  • Cheer, jeer, and celebrate as you desire, but do not cross the barriers, disrupt the competitors, or throw unapproved objects into the lists.
  • Should fortune favor you in more than one contest of equal honor, you may only claim one of the prizes and allow another a chance at glory.
  • Those running attractions may offer exceptions to standard pay—if you’re willing to do something silly at their request. If they decline, do not pester them further.
    • This is to encourage newer players a chance to participate without needing to worry about money.

Fairground Tickets & Prize Vouchers

Tickets are 8cr each, able to be purchased in batches of fives. They are used to participate in any of the attractions the festival has to offer. They may be purchased by any confirmed volunteers, and also pre-purchased before the start of the festivities (in Discord thread with proof of purchase, paid to Lyressi0887).

At the official vendors of the Typhon Tournament, festival-goers may redeem prize vouchers earned from various attractions for an assortment of seasonal trinkets and baubles. Tokens of revelry, crafted to commemorate the fleeting festivities of the faire.

At the fairgrounds, the smithy vendor is able to have vouchers exchanged for prizes, alongside purchase more attraction tickets to keep playing.

Sign Ups

Due to the nature of the tournament, please make sure your team is available on the designated days. If a vacancy opens, you must either fill it with another willing to substitute or forfeit.  Should a mêlée go on for too long, it will enter ‘sudden death’ to ensure other contestants are still able to compete.

  • Those entering their teams may declare their intention to compete by sending notice to the townhall (replying to the thread with the relevant information).
  • Each contestant signing up must pay a fee of 40 crowns (120 for 3 people).
    • Note; All prices are based around one day of voting payout.
  • If signing up for several games, make it clear who is competing in which ones. Please ensure you are available for the days they are intended to be on, as listed above.

Prizes

For winning the competitions, there are four prizes as listed:

  • Varying amounts of prize money based on ranking,
  • Personal request asked of the Lady Steward,
  • Valkian Steel,
  • and a personal meeting with the guest of honor.

Tournament Competitions

Presenting and announcing for the fight's contestants and rounds, they shall be overseen by Secretariat Crow Sorokin and Fukurō. They will be the ones in touch with the morale of the crowds, and comment on the actions of the competing teams.

Mêlée
Sign-ups end the day before the fights begin.

Those signing up for the mêlée must declare a name for their team, and have three listed teammates (which includes the one submitting). The mêlée is not split between skill ranges, but rather ‘martial’ or ‘mage’. When signing up, indicate which category your team is intending to compete within. You will compete against another team in the same category.

Martial; Restricted up to Mage 1.
Mage; Any who are Mage 2+

Morale
At the start of the mêlée, the audience is split in two, one side rooting for the first team, the other rooting for the second. At the top of each round, each side may collectively choose to take one of the following actions to boost their team’s morale, shifting the tides of the fight.

  • Cheer: The audience rallies behind their team, cheering them on and granting them a +1 to damage for that round.
  • Fanfare: The audience throws favors and flowers to their team, granting them a +1 to all aim rolls for that round.
  • Temper: The audience quiets to minimize all distractions to their team, granting them a +1 to defensive rolls (Block, Evade) for that round.
  • Jeer: The audience boos the opposing team, reducing all forms of movement they can take for that round by 2.
  • Enchant: The audience distracts the opposing team, giving them a -1 penalty to aim rolls for that round.
  • Taunt: The audience launches playful insults at the opposing team, shaking their focus and giving them a -2 penalty to all skill checks for that round.

Mock Tribunal
Sign-ups end the day before the debates begin.

Any are able to sign up for this, and are randomly split into two teams on the day of the mock tribunal. In honor of the Lady Steward’s efforts against Quince & Thrice and The Salesman, random topics of debate will be drawn and presented for contestants to argue. They will be absurd in practice, and the goal of the tribunal is to convince the audience.

An example of a debate’s question may be: “If a witch turns a man into a frog, does the frog inherit the man’s debts?” One team will then try to convince the audience of why this is correct, or why it is not.

Knight & Charge
Sign-ups end the day before the fights begin.

A fight with four teams, each being a duo. Between the pair, there is a designated ‘Knight’ and a designated ‘Charge.’ The goal of the game is to steal the Favors of the other competing teams, whilst protecting your own. By the end of the allotted time, they are tallied up. If you remain in possession of your team’s Favor, it is worth more points than a stolen one.

Within the battlements where the teams are fighting, there is a Steward’s Favor that may be obtained for a greater number of points.

Siege the Tower
Sign-ups end the day before the fights begin.

A free-for-all hosted on the tourney grounds, with a scaffolding tower erected in the middle. Contestants must reach the top of it and remain, gaining an additional point for every round. The use of flight is allowed, but they must be grounded to be considered in control.

Combat Modifications

  • Fights are considered lethal due to weaponry and magicks, but are not capable of forcing death onto a contestant (unless they directly wish for it).
  • You are considered eliminated if you reach 0HP, meaning no critical or death saves. Once reaching this point, medical support may carry you away.
  • If ‘sudden death’ is to start, all contestants have their HP instantly halved (rounded down).
  • Combat continues until one team remains, either by elimination or forfeiting.
  • For the Mêlée: Combatants start at 30HP.
  • For Siege the Tower: the threshold for grounding P/E wings is 5DMG.
  • For Knight & Charge: to steal a Favor, the Disarm maneuver is used (once per turn).
