Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)?
"Uhm... Well... Oh divines, where do I start..." Frilmir said under his breath before speaking once more. "Well, I was born in Rulan during the Winter 19 years ago. I also grew up in a poor family with two siblings, but we were loved. I know we were. After all, my mother and father always made sure to care for us and supply us with the necessities, even though crown was short." The young man smiled thinking back to his family. "I always liked playing with my brothers, but I think they thought I was boring. I wasn't much of a fan of combat like they were, after all. Strange, I know." He sighed. Then a memory came back to him. Remembering what had happened when he had grown a few years older left a chill down his spine as his smile faded into a frown.
"When I was 7 years of age, our life seemed to get harder. Crowns were getting harder to come by after my father had been released from his work by his employers. Our food situation was worse than it had ever been after this. My mother and father would sometimes not even eat and give us their food just so we could eat. It felt horrible." He looked down before adding on even more. "It got so bad that when I had become 11 years of age, we lost our home. We were forced into the streets of Rulan. But mother and father didn't seem to be hopeless. They still worked really hard, even if things were really tough." Frilmir stopped, giving himself a short pause. Remembering all of this left a bad taste in his mouth.
"One of my brothers had began to resort to theft to get the family food, but he was always scolded by mother and father for doing so, even if it put food on the table. Then, one day, during his secret trips to steal, he vanished. He hadn't come home, and I never saw him again. I still wonder where he might be, or if he's okay. But if my mother and father had taught me much of anything, then I knew that we couldn't lose hope. And so, I held on."
"We continued about our lives, and eventually, we were able to afford a home again, albeit much smaller than our previous. Though I was glad to have a roof under our heads again." Frilmir smiled. It seemed as if everything in his story was looking good again. "So we lived a happier life, following the teachings of the Phoenix and Equinox. Though we always wondered where my brother who had thieved for survival was, and deep down, I think mother and father knew he was long gone, just as my remaining brother and I did. He was never coming back." He frowned once more, but attempted to put on his smile again. "When I became 18 years of age, I decided to go out and try living my own life, following the teachings of the Phoenix and Equinox. Since then, it's been a struggle to survive, but I've managed. And uh, that's basically it for my story. I hope I didn't bore you." He chuckled, rubbing the back of his head as story time seemed to come to a close.
